Whether we want it to happen or not, there are always thousands of students across the country who get deferred from their dream colleges. For those who must wait the extra five months to find out their fate, they feel a stir of emotions that becomes present the moment they check their status.
1) Shock
They open up the screen to check their student e-mail, expecting to see fireworks and giant letters saying “Congratulations!” but see the words “deferring your application” instead. There is no doubt that having a “This isn’t happening.” moment is on the verge of happening.
2) Sadness
Once they finally have realized that the decision is actually final, tears come out like there is no tomorrow. Soon, they’re crawling up in bed, cuddling and crying to their dog, and asking themselves if they will ever see sunlight again.
3) Anger
Then, they suddenly realize that they do not deserve this at all. They’ve spent all four years working and studying for endless hours each day, making sure they have time to volunteer, and going to ACT/SAT practice classes that seem pointless for THIS?!?
4) Envy
Don’t even get them started on their classmates who were accepted who can’t even tell the difference from “Your” and “You’re”. They will constantly explain why none of their friends should’ve gotten accepted and how they deserve it more. “She didn’t even take any AP classes.” “His ACT score was as low as my age.” You name it, and it’ll be said.
5) Panic
Finally, they realize that they need to reevaluate the situation. If they were not accepted into their dream school, they must have backup options. Googling turns into a frenzy as they research, apply, and schedule tours within minutes. Having backups is the best thing to do to find that one college where they will thrive and be as successful as they would anywhere else.
