As you sit down to watch the Redskins and the Cowboys play with your Thanksgiving plate full of turkey and stuffing, you notice the picture of your family at the state fair above the fireplace. At a commercial break, you see a trailer for the next Tom Hanks movie, and as always, he looks like he is in top form.
While turkey is delicious at any time of the year, and Tom Hanks will always be worthy of winning an Academy Award, there is only one season where all of these things can occur at the same time: fall. As any young adult will tell you, when the weather starts to cool down, the good times heat up. In that spirit, here are five fantastic things that will fill your time during fall.
Whenever football is not in season, everyone is waiting for it to come back. But all throughout fall, football fully captures the hearts and minds of its fans everywhere. It’s impossible to be bored on a fall weekend if you are a football fan. Saturdays are taken up by college football, Sundays are captured by the NFL, and even Mondays and Thursdays are football days. Being America’s favorite sport, football is bound to have a place in your heart, or at the very least the heart of someone you love. Fans of the sport are just happier when it is football season -- except maybe Browns fans.
Food
If you are a fan of good food, then fall is bound to get you excited, because it is the best time to eat during the year. We are more inclined to consume more calories when it gets colder, so it is good that we have the best options. There is no shame in trick-or-treating as an adult if you need to satisfy your sweet tooth, and do not feel bad if you have to put on those stretchy pants for Thanksgiving meals. And you don’t even have to stress about eating a lot because fall marks the beginning of
Fall is the best season for the inner pyromaniac in all of us. Whether it is family time by the fireplace or a cold Saturday night roasting marshmallows around a bonfire, fall is prime time for fire-lovers. Also, I will throw in an extra f to accompany fires: friends. Whether it’s a makeshift campfire or a roaring fireplace, (controlled) fires bring people together. Sometimes you are more likely to make poor decisions when surrounding a fire, but you will still have a good story to share -- even if you do happen to lose an eyebrow.
Festivals
While you are mesmerized by bright fires, don’t forget about deep-fried Oreos and sketchy roller coasters, because festivals are also a big part of fall. Whether it is the State Fair or the Renaissance Festival, fall brings about many opportunities to eat cholesterol-filled foods and have first kisses on Ferris Wheels. Festivals also combine the last two f’s in a concoction of fall goodness. As mentioned, you can eat your weight in funnel cakes and giant turkey legs at any of these events. In fact, it is basically a requirement to do so if you find yourself at a festival. Also, if you are lucky enough to see a performer like Gypsy Geoff, there is bound to be some fire making an appearance.
Films
However, if you don’t like fatty foods, outdoor festivals, combustive heat sources or football, fall still may have something for you. That is because fall marks the beginning of “Oscar Season.” During this time, many of the movies that Hollywood studios expect to excel at the Academy Awards are released. The last five Best Picture winners at the Oscars were released during Oscar season, so it is very likely that the next winner could be released when Pumpkin spice lattes are in season.
