The 5 Best Things About College

Coming to college, we are able to come across many more things that we aren't normally accustomed to in our high school settings. Settling into Brockport, I came to find out what I liked and disliked. So here I have compiled just 5 things that have been pretty up there in my list of likes since coming here.

1. Girls

There is a much larger selection of girls at college. In high school, the average public school has a population somewhere in the thousands if it is in a larger area. Some smaller schools have less than 500 students and that leaves not many choices for guys to chose from. In college, this is around the number in each graduating class. For example Brockport has over 8,000 students. This means we have a much larger selection to choose from when it comes to girls.

2. Parties

In high school in order to party, people had to wait until someone’s parents went away for the weekend and left the house to the kids. This made it so parties only happened every once and awhile. At college, the students themselves rent their own houses without mom and dad. This means that they are able to throw parties whenever they want. Every weekend there are multiple parties and even sometimes on the weekdays, depending on the week. This gives students the opportunity to go out much more than usual.

3. Gym

At most colleges a gym membership is included in the price in tuition. This gives many guys a better opportunity to go to the gym and “get big”. In high school, some schools had gyms that were used by the teams of that season or had poor machines. This meant that people had to go elsewhere and pay for gym memberships. Now that it is included in the tuition, it is much more convenient.

4. Setting Your Schedule

In high school, whenever school started was usually when every student needed to be there and stay the whole entire school day. In college, you have an average of 5 classes that are at various times of the day. You are also able to make your own schedule in college. This is nice for guys because if they want to sleep in, they can choose whenever they wish to start class.

5. Freedom

In college unless you are on a sports team, there is no curfew. This means that guys don’t have to answer to mom and dad anymore. This also means that you don’t have to ask before you do anything. Guys can go out and do whatever they want, whenever they want. They can also bring over whoever they want and they can stay out without having to okay it first.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
