The 5 Best Reasons to Go Home

College is suppose to be a time of freedoms and new experiences that most students can't wait to have. The thought of no curfew and the ability to do whatever you want makes college one of the greatest things in a young adult's life. But just because you have these newfound freedoms doesn't mean that you should forget your roots or your parents.

1. You can have someone do your laundry.

Or at least a guaranteed laundry machine that you don't have remove clothes that have been residing in it for hours. In all the excitement of going out, you've probably forgotten to do your laundry anyway, or you're testing to see how long you can go without doing it. (I know I can make it almost a whole month.)

2. You have someone to pay for things.

Need to run to Walmart? BAM. Mom's credit card. Need a new outfit for that job interview? Dad throws you $20. Doesn't really matter what it is, your parents are pretty great and will pay for it, including your Starbucks addiction.

3. You can have a Netflix marathon and not feel guilty.

You're home for the weekend, which means no responsibilities (that you're willing to admit, anyway). It's even better when your parents and siblings join in. It's okay, that homework can wait anyway.

4. Your parents have missed you.

Which means you can almost get whatever it is you want because they'll do anything to please their baby. If you ask nice enough, you might even get some food and money to take back with you.

5. Free food.

Let's be real, this is the most important reason to go home. As college students, we're used to being broke and hungry. Food is the staple behind any college student and nothing is quite like Mom's homemade meatloaf and mac and cheese. Also, they tend to send you back with some leftovers, so you don't have to cook for a few days.

You shouldn't go home every weekend. Learn to be independent and have fun. However, visiting home is always fun and a good way to spend the weekend. It doesn't matter if you "hated high school" or your hometown. You love your family and be real, you probably aren't leaving your house except to get food anyway. Enjoy college, but don't forget to thank the people who helped raise you by visiting them every once in a while.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
