We are the home of the under-rated magic, but don't underestimate us!

The 5 Benefits of Being a Hufflepuff in College
Hannah Coffey

You read the books, you watched the movies, and you dreamed about your acceptance letter to Hogwarts. While you may or may not be over the disappointing, owl-less 11th birthday, you know exactly which house you would be in and you know who would be your best friends. Whether you are ambitious and cunning like Slytherin, fair and hard-working like Hufflepuff, brave and chivalrous like Gryffindor or witty and individual like Ravenclaw, every house has their strengths and weaknesses in school.

For every Hufflepuff who feels they are under-rated (which they total are) but are now in college, it is your time to shine! Just because we Hufflepuffs are humble, it doesn’t mean that we aren’t just as intelligent, just as determined, or just as courageous as the other three houses! Honestly, we have the best traits for being in college!

1. You are always helping everyone else so on the rare occasion that you miss class people LOVE to help you.

As the hard-working and loyal Hufflepuff you are, you make it to class every day. Usually, you are ten minutes early too, you know, to look at your notes and get the perfect seat. You have extra copies of your notes for all of your friends that miss class often or are just awful at taking notes. Don’t worry though because on the rare occasion that you get sick, everyone will go above and beyond to help you. After all, you have helped them at least ten times in just a few weeks.

2. You are known for being the confidante in the group.

Well, sometimes it’s not even in the group. Let's get real, as a Hufflepuff, you have everyone’s back. We are loyal. That’s just how we are. But do not get us wrong, if you attack a Hufflepuff or any of our friends, our badger instincts will kick in. We keep every secret that we hear, and we stand up for every person that we care about. Honestly, it isn’t just the people we care about, it is just the idea that it isn’t fair for people to judge and attack others. So here we are, ready to hear everything you need to get off of your chest. Just like Tonks, we believe everyone should be bold and be whatever you want to be.

3. Your grades are always good. You may have to spend more time studying but it is worth it!

Sometimes people get upset because you plant yourself at the best seat in the library. Ravenclaw’s tend to downplay our intelligence, but do not underestimate a Hufflepuff. We are still very intelligent people. Plus we work twice as hard on the topics that we are not as strong in. It may mean that we skip going out on Friday or Saturday, but one night staying in is way better when you turn in work that you are proud of. Just wait, we will prove you wrong when we graduate with honors!

4. You always split the bill.

Hufflepuffs ALWAYS offer to pay or split the bill because friendship is way better than money. Even when you go out with a big group of people and all you order is a cup of soup and everyone else’s dish is way more expensive. This may get you taken advantage of, but you know you will find your group. Besides, memories are way better than being upset about money. Plus, people know that you are good for your word so you get invited to even more parties and events.

5. You make tons of friends and connections because you aren’t just at the events for free food.

There is one word that college students like more than any other. Free. Free t-shirts, free food, free water bottles, free bags, or free giftcards, we want it all. Even the witches and wizards understand that these events that come with free things are coveted. However, being a Hufflepuff we tend to get pretty involved. It’s in our nature to get super excited. When we go to the fitness event with free food, we walk away with a 5k training schedule. When we go to a career fair for the free t-shirt, we walk away with three job opportunities. Everything we do, we jump in headfirst.

Like Cedric Diggory, Tonks, and all the other great Hufflepuffs, we are strong, smart, and full of love. The best part about being a Hufflepuff is that we have all the traits of the other houses, but we hold integrity and loyalty as the highest values. Just remember, Hufflepuffs are totally under-rated.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
