The 4th Annual Phi Sig Sing-Off

Sing it from the heart; sing it for the world. Or at least for a bar in Garden City.

Hey y'all! This is maybe going to read more like a blog post than an article proper, but I wanted to let you know about an awesome event that happened this past week: the Phi Sig Sing-Off!

I didn't get to go last year because I was sick, but I was extremely glad I was able to be there this year! It was held at an awesome little bar on approximately the border of Garden City and Westland called Renegades. They have karaoke every night except Tuesdays, when they turn their stage over to live bands! I was so excited that Phi Sigma Sigma could host this fundraiser there this year, because it's a karaoke fundraiser and up to this point, the venue hasn't been a karaoke bar. Hopefully, the Sing-Off has found its new home!

A bit about the purpose of the fundraiser: all of Phi Sigma Sigma's proceeds go to our Chapter Education Fund ("CEF"), which goes to granting sisters scholarships. Cool story: not too long ago, our chapter's CEF wasn't doing so well. But then this fundraiser was born, and now we can actually give deserving sisters scholarships so that they can rock their schoolwork as well as they can rock the karaoke stage!

So we don't have to rely on "Mamaaaaaa, oooooooooo..." *cough* I mean, what?

The event itself was incredibly fun: on top of karaoke, there was a table full of prize baskets that were raffled off at the end of the night, including baskets with Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers tickets! Raffle tickets themselves were fairly inexpensive, and those prizes were pretty darn good (plus, pre-sale tickets to the event came with three free raffle tickets, so it's really a win-win).

As for the karaoke itself, a lot of people picked songs from the article I wrote last week, which made me really happy because I was secretly thinking, "Ha! I was right! Yay!" But it also made me feel good because I still love those songs, myself, and I was standing up by the stage bopping along like I was at a concert.

blink-182 was relatively popular. I felt vindicated. I don't actually remember if they were singing something blink-182 in this particular photo or if it was "My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit, because I'm pretty sure it was that or blink-182, but it was good either way.

My own song selection when I went up solo was a little less boisterous, but I did manage to hit a note that had the entire bar cheering for me, and one of my friends told me that was the best she'd ever heard me sing.

It was the most incredible feeling in the world.

Everyone who went up onto the stage just had fun, and no matter whether or not they hit all the right notes, no one got booed or anything. Even if they picked a song that apparently no one wanted to hear...

Just in case you can't read the tiny text on the bottom, the full sign says "Kid Rock is an ass! No one wants to hear 'Picture.' Ever. Or 'Don't Stop Believing' for that matter. I didn't believe to begin with..."

One of the waitresses I talked to described it as "not 'American Idol,'" which was, in the best way, entirely true.

All in all, if you see an ad for a sorority or fraternity event, consider going! Even if you go solo, chances are that you'll have a great time!

We even had our own Snapchat filter, guys. So legit.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

2021
Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. You feel like you will have never-ending classwork to catch up on if you miss class, so you end up going sick and then it just takes longer to get better. Being sick in college is really tough and definitely not a fun experience. Here are the 15 stages that everyone ends up going through when they are sick at college.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
