Its finally here and we are already off to a great start. Open ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics yesterday delved into the rich history of Brazil and offered a cultural experience of all that Brazil has to offer. I was very excited for the Olympics this year because I made it a personal goal to watch as many events and athletes as I could and NBC hasn't let me down so far.
The Olympics has always been a staple in my family, we root for our country and others. This is actually the first year I know somebody personally participating in the Olympics. Needless to say, as this was the first day of events most of my day consisted of me laying in bed flipping between NBC channels trying to watch as much I could. So far, I was able to watch multiple women soccer games, USA vs. France especially could not be missed. I watched the Men's Cycling road race and darn near cried watching the cyclists go up and down huge hills feeling the burn they must have felt after riding for 6 hours straight. Good job, guys! I couldn't do it. Brazil dominated in the Women's beach volleyball against the Czech Republic. I even got a little bit of table tennis of the US vs Venezuela.
There was one event I had to look up because I have never seen it before: Handball. By the way, that is the one thing about the Olympics that never fails, you never know all of the sports involved in the Olympics unless you were in the sport, you know somebody in the sport, or you're like me and stumbled upon it. Handball is a game consisting of two teams of seven, two goals, and it usually is played indoors. The goal of the game is to make as many goals as possible while avoiding the defensive players. It is a contact sport. It was a really good game and I was surprised that it even existed much less be a part of the Olympics.
Anywho, currently, Australia is leading in medal standings with two gold medals and one bronze, Hungary is following with two gold and the US is pulling in at third with one gold and four silvers. Stayed tuned because I'm sure much like a lot of social media your news feeds will be flooded with many updates on the standings and gossips as the Olympics continue.
