Growing up with siblings was arguably the greatest part of my childhood. Built in friends, mentors, tutors, you name it, my siblings probably had it covered. However, my experience was a little different. You see my younger sister and I are separated by a 13 year age gap, and as I get older I'm beginning to realize just how lucky I am for it.
1. It's socially acceptable for me to do things most 20 year olds can't.
Having a younger sister means I can take her trick or treating, or just steal her candy, and it's completely acceptable.
2. I can always count on her for a laugh.
I think we all at one point or another thought the spoon for a McFlurry was a straw- but it's really funny when it's not you. (May or may not have had her convinced that she was just doing it wrong for a solid five minutes before she realized it was spoon.)
3. I appreciate the little things.
I forgot how fun carving pumpkins and easter egg hunts can be, and watching my sister experiencing these things for the first time has been so great.
4. My own personal makeup artist.
By the time I started wearing makeup on a regular basis, my sister was old enough to want to get into everything and do everything I was doing. I had my fair share of makeovers, which I won't share pictures of because lets be real, little kids aren't the greatest makeup artists.
5. She reminds me not to care what people think.
My sister is easily one of the weirdest people I've ever met and I love it. When I was 17 and worried about what people would think about everything I did-- she was running around with a tutu on her head singing in the driveway. She's a constant reminder to not give a crap what people think and just have fun.
At the end of the day, having a sister so much younger than me has been one of the greatest things in life. I wouldn't trade her bratty little self for the world.
