When walking into your first college class you don't really know what to expect. High school teachers tell you that you're independent, but then the professor starts off with their "rules" about college. So, in that case with the holidays and finals rushing up on us I decided to twist up the holiday classic, "The twelve days of Christmas" to "The 12 days of College." Most college students should be able to relate to these!

On the first day of college, my Professor said to me, all you will do is study.

On the second day of college, my Professor said to me, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

On the third day of college, my Professor said to me, listen to my lectures, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

On the fourth day of college, my Professor said to me, no extra credit, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

On the fifth day of college, my Professor said to me, fix all the errors, no extra credit, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

On the sixth day of college, my Professor said to me, get your lab hours, fix all the errors, no extra credit, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

On the seventh day of college, my Professor said to me, stop sleeping in class, get your lab hours, fix all the errors, no extra credit, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

On the eighth day of college, my Professor said to me, don't ask stupid questions, stop sleeping in class, get your lab hours, fix all the errors, no extra credit, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

On the ninth day of college, my Professor said to me, don't pack up early, don't ask stupid questions, stop sleeping in class, get your lab hours, fix all the errors, no extra credit, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

On the tenth day of college, my Professor said to me, use professional corresponse, don't pack up early, don't ask stupid questions, stop sleeping in class, get your lab hours, fix all the errors, no extra credit, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

On the eleventh day of college, my Professor said to me, stop partying, use professional corresponse, don't pack up early, don't ask stupid questions, stop sleeping in class, get your lab hours, fix all the errors, no extra credit, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

On the twelfth day of college, my Professor said to me, PAY ATTENTION, stop partying, use professional corresponse, don't pack up early, don't ask stupid questions, stop sleeping in class, get your lab hours, fix all the errors, no extra credit, never skip class, and all you will do is study.

Ten Truths Every Honors Student Knows
Photo by Poodar Chu on Unsplash

One of the main reasons I came to Salem State was I was offered a spot in the honors program. While it offered many benefits, scholarships and priority registration to name a few, what drew me in was the strong sense of community and close knit friendships many found. I am glad to say that that I did find these things, and so much more. I found a home made up of some of the most brilliant and most unique people I have ever met. Being in an honors program creates a college experience unlike any other and creates some universal truths that really only an honors student can fully understand.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?
