The 11 Best Things About The Holidays

My favorite season of them all

The 11 Best Things About The Holidays
Melody Tamminen

The holidays really are the best season there is. It is a time of giving, love, and being with your family. Below are the very few reasons I love the holidays.

FOOD

I am already mentally preparing myself to gain at least 10 pounds when I go home for the holidays. It is something I have come to terms with. The food my family makes is just too good to ever pass up. Let's just say I have very little willpower.

Getting to see extended family

One of my favorite parts of the holidays is seeing the family I usually do not get to see. I love to be able to see my favorite cousins, aunts and uncles, and my great grandfather. Family is so important to me, so this is one part of the holidays that makes me the happiest.

Christmas music

I am currently trying my hardest not to play Christmas music at all seconds of every day until Christmas. One of the saddest things I have to do on December 26th is stop listening to holiday tunes.

Giving/receiving gifts

Everyone loves getting presents from friends and family, of course. Although the real joy of the holidays comes from giving. I love seeing the faces of my friends and family when I get them a present they really love. Not only giving gifts, but giving to Salvation Army and other organizations who try to help the less fortunate people during the holidays. It is important everyone has a memorable and amazing holiday season.

Cozy weather

There are not many things I love more than being able to put on my Christmas pajamas, have a mug of hot chocolate, put on some fuzzy socks, sit by the fire, and watch a movie or read a book while it is snowing outside.

Traditions

Every family has so many different traditions when the holidays come around. I love hearing what my friends are doing with their families. Whether it is Christmas Eve parties, New Years Eve parties, or doing White Elephant gift exchanges. It is something to look forward too and is sometimes my favorite part of the holidays to spend time with tons of my favorite people.

Decorations

My family always decorates the Christmas tree together every year. Ever since I have been at college, I can't decorate the tree with my mom and dad and that is something that breaks my heart every time they put it up without me there. I also love to drive around with my best friends and look at all the beautiful Christmas lights.

The Holiday break from school

Who doesn't love to come home from school for three weeks or more? I love nothing more than to get away from the craziness that is school and get a chance to sit around with my family who I do not get to see a lot. It is the most relaxing time to not have the stress of school weighing you down.

Parties

Themed Christmas parties, Christmas Eve parties, and New Years Eve parties are always a favorite part of the holidays. I love picking out outfits for them all and getting to see tons of people that I usually do not get to see ever.

Christmas movies

I wait until Christmas every year to watch my favorite Christmas movies. Elf, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, and the Grinch top my list for sure. I can't go a holiday season without watching these at least ten times.

Christmas day with all the people you love

What is better than spending Christmas Day with your family?

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
