The 10 Types Of College Roommates You Will Meet

Roommates come in all different shapes and sizes.

1. The one who sleeps a lot

They're already asleep when you're getting ready for bed, and they're asleep when you get back from class. You're not sure when they get any work done or if they've even made it out of bed and to that day's class.

2. The one who never sleeps

This is probably also the roommate who has binge-watched an entire series on Netflix since returning to school. Who else has the time to do that and all the schoolwork we get? You're kinda envious (OK, really envious) that they can manage with such little sleep.

3. The neat freak

You can't live with them, and you can't live without them. When you walk in your room and throw your stuff all over, your roommate is right there behind you picking up your belongings. But she's always there with a never ending supply of paper towels.

4. The slob

Once again, you can't live with them and you can't live without them. It's fine if they're messy, as long as it stays in their section. Once it overflows into yours, you become the neat freak.

5. The one who knows everyone

You can't walk more than five steps without them stopping to say hi to someone, which then leads to a whole conversation. You have to awkwardly wait for them to wrap up their conversation before you can walk another five feet them to see someone else they know.

6. The one who is super involved

You never see this roommate. They went to the activities fair and signed up for every table they stopped at. When someone asks where they are, you honestly can't answer.

7. The procrastinator

It's midnight, and they're just sitting down at their desk to start their assignment due at 8 a.m. And you know this will probably result in a mental/emotional breakdown an hour later. You just keep their distance and let them do their thing.

8. The partier

No matter what day of the week it is or what time of the day it is, this roommate is ready to go out. They have a 9 a.m. class the next morning and they don't care. You definitely spend a decent amount of time worrying about their sanity.

9. The roommate who is not really your roommate

They're usually someone's friend from home or a current roommates old roommate. But regardless of who they are, they're welcomed with open arms. You can usually find them sprawled out on the floor or in someone's bed. You wonder how long before they just move in.

10. Your best friend(s)

No matter what type of roommate you have, hopefully, they're also your best friend(s). There's no better bonding then living with each other.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
