10 Quintessential Longhorn Bars

There's no shortage of great bars near UT and around the city, but some are just known for attracting Longhorns.

1. Cain & Abel's

2313 Rio Grande St.

With its West Campus location, packed dollar beer night on Tuesdays and killer Texas Teas, Cain & Abel's tops the chart.

2. Hole in the Wall

2538 Guadalupe St.

For more than 40 years, Longhorns have been visiting Hole in the Wall, one of West Campus' most classic bars. It's a little funky, often featuring live music and far-out delicious food. With its chill atmosphere, it's the perfect place to unwind.

3. Cactus Cafe

2247 Guadalupe St. (Inside the Union.)

This drinking oasis located conveniently on campus gives patrons a mellow scene during the day and a more rocking one at night, featuring many local artists. It's got a rich history spanning more than 35 years, and although efforts have been made to close it, pushback from patrons always stops them. It's just that loved.

4. Austin's Pizza

2324 Guadalupe St.

With amazing pizza available 24 hours a day and cheap drinks, this West Campus staple easily makes the list. Hit up Austin's Pizza for a more mellow dollar beer night on Tuesdays if you can't take the noise at Cain's.

5. Blind Pig Pub

317 East Sixth St.

When you ask Longhorns what their favorite Sixth Street bar is, at least half the time you'll hear Blind Pig Pub. The bar is bouncing any night of the week, often features good cover bands, has a rooftop dance floor and PLAYS GOOD SONGS. If you want to escape the EDM that's overtaken Sixth with some modern party classics, this is the bar for you.

6. The Aquarium on Sixth

403 East Sixth St.

You'll find this bar packed with Longhorns on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. It's got good people, good drinks, beer pong tables and plenty of room for dancing or just hanging out.

7. The Library

407 East Sixth St.

Maybe it's the studious nature of UT students that makes them flock to this interestingly-named bar on the weekends.

8. Buckshot

422 East Sixth St.

Quickly grabbing the attention of UT students after its opening several years ago, Buckshot has become a Longhorn downtown staple. Its big space and expansive menu really make it a good time.

9. Cheers

416 East Sixth St.

No one thinks of the TV show when you mention Cheers around UT students. With shots like "Sex With an Alligator," "Mind Eraser" and "Surfer on Acid," how could you go wrong?

10. Shakespeare's Pub

314 East Sixth St.

Even among English majors, UT students are more likely to think of the bar than the great playwright when you mention the name. Shakespeare's is known for its $5 pitchers of Long Island iced tea, rocking rooftop and, more recently, basement dance floor. This list wouldn't be complete without it.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
