That's So Me!

Have you ever read your horoscope and thought, "that's so me"?

Last night, my friends and I began talking about horoscopes and zodiac signs when we realized that three of us were all Gemini’s. “Oh my god that’s why we’re so similar!” we said. Then one of the guys we were with wanted to know what his sign was, and of course we had negative reactions when he told us his birthday; Scorpio. “What does that mean?” he asked, we tried explaining to him the traits that Scorpio’s possess such as being spiteful, conniving, hidden emotions, etc. However, he just wasn’t getting it. Today my friend sent him the daily horoscope for Scorpio’s and after reading it he replied to her saying “That’s so me!”

Some people believe in horoscopes, and some people don’t (especially after NASA broke all of our hearts with the “you’ve been reading the wrong horoscopes” press realease). Some people read them for fun, and a few of us take them a bit more seriously. Every Monday I pull out my phone to read my horoscope for the week on the Cosmo Snapchat. I can’t forget because I even occasionally get a text from my roommate reminding me that “it’s horoscope Monday.” I have to admit, some weeks it’s more satisfying than others, and I guess it could be a matter of what you want to hear. “You’ll meet a new guy through friends Saturday” compared to “You’ll make some tough decisions this week regarding work” makes a big difference in how optimistic you begin your Monday.

I'm not going to lie, sometimes I take my horoscopes a little too seriously. A few weeks ago my horoscope said "If there are important conversations to be had to clear the air, do it on Tuesday or Thursday. After that, make peace with the situation an move on." Now, this was too relevant for me to ignore. At the time I was experiencing some tension between me and one of my roommates and there were a few things I needed to say to her. My other roommate kept telling me I needed to talk to her and tell her what I was thinking, after reading this horoscope I said, "I know, I'm going to talk to her tomorrow." One of my friends who's a zodiac on the cusp (meaning your birthday is the day one zodiac ends and another starts) read her Gemini horoscope which wasn't on the spot, and then her Taurus horoscope which said "A visitor might come over today. Taurus, but you might wonder why this person bothered, he or she may seem distracted." She read this as she was having a conversation with a guy who came over earlier in the day to say goodbye before he leaves for 6 months.

As much as I love reading my horoscope, I do realize how generalized they can be. My teacher for my "Space and Time" astronomy class senior year told us a story about how he used to hand out everyone's "specific" horoscope to them to read, and everyone would have the same reaction; "That's so me." In the end, they found out the were all given the same horoscope.

Whether or not I truly believe in horoscopes, I'll always refer to one of my best friends from home as my Gemini twin (we have the same middle name, brown hair, AND our names both start with J?) and I'll probably keep reading my horoscope every Monday/daily and if you're a Scorpio, you can't sit with us.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
