As a product of the '90s, I'm biased to say that my childhood was the greatest. Every decade is awesome in its own way. But there's something about the '90s that stands out from all of the others. Being a filmmaker and cinephile, it's easy to be inspired by what captured my imagination as a kid. I've put together a list of the top 10 titles I'd personally love to see produced in a remake or reimagination for a modern take.
10. "Street Sharks."
Sure, this series might've been a knock-off of certain mutated ninja turtles, but isn't there room for four bothers who get mutated into sharks that fight crime? Not to mention some of the best toys came from this show. With technology, there has to be four guys that'd wouldn't mind hopping into motion-capture suits.
9. "Are You Afraid of the Dark?"
One of the most memorable series' title openings ever (for Nickolodeon shows at least). This series deserves to be revamped for a new audience to deliver chills. Nickelodeon needs to bring back some scare to its line-up.
8. "Johnny Bravo meets Dexter's Laboratory"
Ok, maybe I'm cheating squeezing two in one here, but wouldn't you want to see Johnny Bravo cross paths with Dexter? In an age of shared universes, I love the idea of seeing outsider Johnny Bravo befriend a kid who's too smart for his own good. An unlikely friendship that makes for an epic pairing.
7. "Swat Kats"
This was a show that amped me up for no reason other than the premise of two cats zooming in jets and kicking serious butt. That alone deserves either a new animated series or an animated/live action adaptation. For real, talking cats flying jets. Take my money!
6. "The Wild Thornberrys"
An awesome cartoon that focused on family matters. With today's technology, the visuals of exotic settings and versatile animal life would be stunning. I'd want to see Will Farrell as Nigel Thornberry (not necessarily cast him, just see him audition because I bet that'd be gold).
5. "Rocket Power"
The show that made every kid think they could become a hero in skateboarding, street hockey, surfing, etc. A film that could be a blend of The Goonies, Mighty Ducks and Stand by Me, but with all that is gnarly and extreme.
4. "The Powerpuff Girls"
Wonder Woman and Katniss are pretty cool but they lack the sugar, spice and everything nice that a Powerpuff Girl film could provide. Three girls empowered to save the world before their bedtime is as intriguing as anything Hollywood wants to sell us at this point in the superhero genre so why not. Also, maybe Jon Hamm as Professor Utonium? I don't know, just brainstorming!
3. "Dragon Ball Z"
Last week, I dropped my what if Hollywood made a DBZ film and it's obvious I'd stick it on this list. If you haven't ready my DBZ article, check it out (might be worth a glance to see what I have in mind for casting like Channing Tatum as Tien). There's serious potential in sequels and establishing an incredible DBZ cinematic universe! Hint, hint to Hollywood.
2. Doug
To me, it's the John Hughes of storytelling that Nickelodeon gave us. A boy trying to figure out he fits into the world: being a good son, brother and friend; dealing with school bullies; and, of course, winning the heart of the one and only Patty Mayonnaise. Doug would be an amazing film if you think about the potential of delving into the world of Quailman. A kid who snaps in and out of reality as he makes sense of both worlds. We need a Doug movie! Heck, I'd even settle for a Netflix live-action series.
1. "Legends of the Hidden Temple"
I don't know how, but I know this needs to be a film. Everybody loves "Jumanji" so why not "Legends of the Hidden Temple." Just make it happen already!
So there's my list of movies/series if love to see adapted for a modern era. What do you think? What did I miss? I'll do my best to pitch these ideas when I go to LA on my next visit. In the meantime, sharing this story with friends can help get the discussion started!
