"That's Gay"

Our Identity Is Not Your Filler Word

"That's Gay"

"OCD...," "Depressed...," "Queer...," "ADHD...," "Mental...," "Anxiety...," "ADD...," "Immigrant...," "Girl...," "Pussy...," "Dick...," "Bipolar...," "Retarded...," "Gay..."

These are more than just filler words. These are people's identities.

High School, Junior Year, Chemistry. I remember the guy across from me calling something "gay." I remember disagreeing and asking him not to use "gay" in such a way.

"Are you gay?"

Because the only reason to be upset with the use of "gay" as a filler word, is if you yourself are. Because never mind the fact that you are insinuating that someone's identity is something wrong. Never mind the fact that "gay" is not the only identity being slandered by public slang. Because it's "okay" and did not "offend" my openly gay friend beside me.

It's not okay.

"OCD...," "Depressed...," "Queer...," "ADHD...," "Mental...," "Anxiety...," "ADD...," "Immigrant...," "Girl...," "Pussy...," "Dick...," "Bipolar...," "Retarded...," "Gay..."

These are not terms you can use to describe something negatively. These are not terms you can use to joke about. These are not words to use to offend other people. These are not your words.

They do not belong to you. These are someone else's identity. Never mind the fact that no one with you identifies with one currently. Do not turn someone's identity against them. Do not use their identity to describe something completely separate from what it means.

You are the reason for the stigma.

You are the perpetrator of microaggressions.

You are the slanderer of identities.

You are a part of the problem.

"OCD...," "Depressed...," "Queer...," "ADHD...," "Mental...," "Anxiety...," "ADD...," "Immigrant...," "Girl...," "Pussy...," "Dick...," "Bipolar...," "Retarded...," "Gay..."

Regardless of my sexual orientation, I am not okay. Regardless of my mental health, my ethnicity, my identity, I am not okay.

I am not okay with the misuse of these terms and many others, not because I am overly sensitive but because of the negativity you are assigning to an identity of someone else. Regardless of those around you, regardless of "if they are okay with it," it's not okay.

We cannot move on in society and accept others if people continue to misuse our identities.

"OCD...," "Depressed...," "Queer...," "ADHD...," "Mental...," "Anxiety...," "ADD...," "Immigrant...," "Girl...," "Pussy...," "Dick...," "Bipolar...," "Retarded...," "Gay..."

We are people, we are human beings. Just because we identify with one or more or some other word, it does not make us any less of a person.

birthday party

My birthday has never been my favorite holiday. I've found that I'm more excited to celebrate my friends' and family members' birthdays more than my own. I don't like being the center of attention, so I usually celebrate over dinner with a small group of family and friends. This way, I can enjoy myself naturally without feeling like I have to entertain everyone and make sure they are satisfied. In the past when I've had large parties, I was so nervous that people weren't perfectly content that I didn't enjoy myself at my own celebration.

College Informations

Most of us have already started the spring semester, and for those of you who haven't started yet, you suck.

It seems like coming back from winter break wouldn't really be a break all things considered, since we all come back to school and pick up right where we left off. We know exactly what to expect, yet we're unprepared every single time.

I'm serious

There are tons of unisex names that are popular: Taylor, Alex, Bailey, etc. There are also numerous names that are used for both sexes, but they’re not seen as “unisex” yet. People are slowly becoming accustomed to the dual use of these names, but for the most part, in their minds they associate certain names with certain sexes. And that leaves those of us with these names in many awkward situations.

You know that all of these things apply to you. You'll just never tell.

I'm an anthropology major, and I love every minute of it. I couldn't tell you why, but I guess there's just something about studying different lifestyles that absolutely fascinates me. But anthropology majors definitely have our weird sides, especially when you go to a school that is filled with mostly Business and Bio majors. But us weirdos definitely have a lot in common, specifically these 16 things.

pale girl

Everyone has insecurities, that's just a fact. You didn't ask to be born this way. You didn't ask to inherit the one trait no one else in your family has. And you definitely didn't ask to be this ghostly white. But as soon as you've learned to live with it for a while (less wrinkles later on in life, right? right???) someone has to ruin it for you. They have to flaunt they're perfectly tanned body from Spring Break and hold their sun-kissed skin against yours. But I've had enough... here are the things that perpetually pale individuals are tired of hearing.
