Scary. Clever. Unique. Terrifying. All of these adjectives can be seen filling up the comment section of the hauntingly new rising YouTube star, That Poppy. Appearing out of the blue, That Poppy has been making videos since around 2011, but has recently caught the worlds attention. Poppy stars in all her videos alone, with the rare exception of when she invites her 'friends' a plant and Charlotte the mannequin to join her. Many viewers claim that she's just crazy with her oddly calming voice and her Kawaii girl style. I mean, she does have a 10 minute video of her repeating "I'm Poppy" over and over again.
Yet, That Poppy is actually one of the most clever artists of our time. Hidden within each video is actually a message about how deranged and involved our society is with social media and celebrities. Though no one really knows who is behind the character of That Poppy (all that is known is that her name is actually Moriah Pereira), Poppy herself acts as a big pop star with a huge cult following. In many of her videos she asks if her fans will do anything for her, if they'll follow her into anything. This plays at how celebrities today are constantly endorsing and encouraging their fans to be "like them" and buy these products. It doesn't stop there, either. Poppy makes DIY videos with outrageous instructions, does fakes endorsement videos, and even touches on drug culture and how some celebs make drugs seem perfectly normal. She also plays on religion sometimes having videos where she reads the whole bible, to even poking fun at scientology and even the Illuminate.
Not only does she do these videos, she also creates music as well. Her songs are pop styled and super catchy. In her music videos she also pokes fun at our culture, showing how the producers are old men with money bags and when she leaves to greet fans she takes a paint brush and paints over pictures of herself as an 'autograph'. These music videos target the celebrity lifestyle and even the industry food chain.
Even though That Poppy is eccentric and a little creepy, she subtly shows how methodic and scripted our society really is. Through her videos, Poppy really shows what we consider entertainment in a rather brutal light.
