Every year it's the same thing; summer goes and autumn comes, then candy and costumes invade stores and shops. Then the second after the trick-or-treating event, the trees and gingerbread flood the malls and stores. No one seems to remember the day in which we feast on turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie with friends and family. It may not be as exciting as going out and receiving candy from strangers or expensive gifts from relatives, but that doesn't make it any less of a holiday.
The way I see it is, Thanksgiving is the middle child of the trio of end-of-the-year holidays. Halloween- the youngest child- is a time to let out your silly, mischievous side by dressing up and playing tricks on others. Christmas- the oldest child- is a time for joy and generosity, by giving and receiving gifts from loved ones. In some cases, it's the time for planning and being responsible for hosting annual Christmas parties and events. And then right in between the two is Thanksgiving- the middle child. This holiday is a time for showing our thankfulness and appreciation to certain people in our lives. Of course it's just as important as the other holidays, but it never seems to get any appreciation. Although I myself am not a middle child, I have had friends whom have been the middle child. There's nothing wrong with being the middle child in a family of course, but from the experiences of my middle-child-friends, it seems as though not enough credit or attention is give, compared to the older or younger children.
There are so many great things about Thanksgiving that people often over look. Thanksgiving is a time to get together with family and friends, to enjoy the last of the pumpkin spice season, and (of course) for any sports fans out there, to watch football whilst enjoying Thanksgiving dinner. During Thanksgiving, you don't need to stress over getting presents for any one before a party. You get to spend quality time with those who are close to you, and you get to enjoy a nice dinner as well. There's something for everyone when it comes to thanksgiving dinner. Potatoes, corn, turkey, stuffing, rice, salad, the list goes on. And let's not forget all the desserts that Thanksgiving has to offer. You can always end your holiday with a slice of pumpkin pie or sugar cookies shaped like turkeys.
It's important not to forget that Thanksgiving is a holiday that reminds us to be grateful for what we have. Stores may not be bombarded with banners and blow-up outdoor decorations of cornucopias or pilgrims, but a holiday's significance isn't measured by how many products in stores it sells.
