Thanksgiving dinner is one of the meals I look forward to all year long. It's one of my favorites to cook and enjoy, but the cooking doesn't end that day... If your family is anything like mine, you end up with turkey leftovers for what feels like weeks. One of my favorite things to do with the leftovers is make a sandwich to rule all sandwiches.
Step 1: Choose Your Bread
I ended up using a dinner roll as my bread but anything works. Keep in mind what you plan on doing with your sandwich, i.e. if you plan on grill pressing it, account for how fluffy your bread is.
Step 2: Potato Layer
Next, spread both sides with your choice of potato. I used the mashed sweet potatoes I made this year. (You can find the recipe here. They were delicious!!)
Step 3: More Bread!
Right after the potato comes the stuffing. The stuffing sticks to the potatoes, and it has a better chance of staying put. (Yay, science!)
Step 4: Gravy and Turkey
One of my favorite combos is hot gravy and cold turkey. However, make sure you put the gravy on the sandwich before the turkey. The stuffing layer soaks up the gravy and keeps you a little cleaner in the end.
(I usually add some cranberry sauce at this point, too, but my stuffing had cranberry and apple, so I skipped that step.)
Step 5: Enjoy!
Smash it all together, and go crazy! You get all your favorite flavors in one awesome sandwich. Yum!
In addition, you can't go wrong with more layers. Add some greens or green bean casserole, too. Try warming up everything except the turkey or leave it all cold except the bread. (Grilling your sandwich adds another level of deliciousness, as well.) Don't hesitate to experiment with it!
