Thanksgiving in High School and Thanksgiving in College

How my appreciation for thanksgiving changed from when I was in high school to when I began college

Thanksgiving has always been a holiday I’ve enjoyed because of the good food and quality time I get to spend with my family. However, with the entirety of my extended family living in other countries, I’ve only ever spent my Thanksgivings with my immediate family - my mom, dad, brother, and sister. Thanksgiving for me in high school was never particularly special, or as special as it is now that I’m in college because it was spent with the four other people I used to see every day.

Although Thanksgiving may have not felt super special while I was in high school because it was more or less just a fancy meal with the family I already saw everyday, I do appreciate Thanksgiving more now that I’m in college because I get to spend quality time with my family that I no longer see as often as I once did. Nowadays, I typically see my parents once every month or two and my siblings on even rarer occasions now that one attends college too and the other is in high school. Although I'll never straight up admit I’m happy to see them all again, I’m truly glad that a holiday such as Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity, or an excuse to spend some quality family time together and catch up on the past several months.

Since I’ve been in college, Thanksgiving has become a much more important holiday to me than it ever was to me in high school because I get to see the family I no longer get to see everyday during the week we have off. I don’t know whether other college students who celebrate Thanksgiving with more family appreciate Thanksgiving more now that they’re in college, however, I suspect that many likely do and are probably keen on going home for Thanksgiving break. Perhaps some of you reading this article haven’t ever really thought about whether or not you appreciate Thanksgiving more now that you’re living away from home, although I am curious. Do you appreciate Thanksgiving more than you once did now that you’re living by yourself and don’t see your family as much as you once may have?

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
