I'm sure there have been plenty of articles written about Thanksgiving and here's one more. Thanksgiving is about being with family and friends and celebrating what we're all thankful for, which usually involves life, family, friends, and being happy. Depending on the family, there's some kind of religious aspect. My family usually has a dinner on Thursday afternoon and because we are a large family, we split up into the kitchen and living room to eat. Most of the kids end up sitting with my aunt at the table in the kitchen, which results in her asking us all to go around the table and say what we're thankful for. It gets awkward sometimes since everyone else's responses deal with religion and mine do not. I would rather it just be an understood thing that most of us are thankful for having friends, family, and the ability to celebrate another day of our lives. But, there are other aspects of Thanksgiving that I enjoy as well, including watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and spending time with my family at our dinner. Some of my favorite foods that are served at my family dinner are not traditionally "Thanksgiving" foods, but they're still delicious nonetheless.
1. Turkey
This is the most traditional food out there because it's a beloved favorite. My family usually makes two or three to accommodate for our entire family.
2. Ham
This is one food that has a debate going on. Apparently, it can only be a "Christmas" food, but I don't really see why. My family has both Turkey and Ham on Thanksgiving and Christmas, which is a better alternative since some people only eat one or the other. When my partner and I begin our holiday traditions, we will have both because he only eats Turkey, but I eat both meats.
3. Dressing
This is also a beloved favorite. My mom makes two kinds: one with eggs and one without because I don't eat eggs. I used to despise dressing, but once I got older I realized how much I really loved it and now it gets devoured at Thanksgiving.
4. Potatoes
This food item can go many ways, but I don't think you can go wrong with making any kind of potatoes. My family usually makes scalloped potatoes because my mom knows how to make them from scratch. They're so delicious.
5. Collard Greens
This is a dish that my dad makes and it's mainly for him and us kids because no one else really eats them. I could eat the entire pot of greens because they're so appetizing.
6. Rice and Gravy (Cream of Chicken Soup)
This also a dish that is less common at holiday dinners. Many people in my family eat rice, so a few years back we began serving rice at our holiday dinners because we knew everyone would eat it.
7. Rolls
This is the one task that I get assigned when I show up at dinner: to butter rolls. I must being doing a fantastic job because the rolls are always on point.
8. Pie
This dish becomes a competition in my family because my mom will make two pumpkin pies and two pecan pies, while my papaw (granddad) will make 4 cheesecakes (blueberry and cherry). Either way, they all get eaten.
