You go home for the holidays and almost every time, nothing has changed. Regardless of change or not, your family misses you and wants to hear about the latest and greatest that is going on in your life. So here you are again, getting asked the same questions for another year in a row. As you’re getting asked these questions your internal monologue might sound something like this.
1. So what’s new?
Ummm…nothing. Literally nothing is new with me. I still go to the same school, I still have the same major, I still have a minimum wage job. What’s new?...This outfit I bought just to eat dinner in is new.
2. How’s school going?
Right after stuffing mashed potatoes into your mouth you get asked this question. You stare off into the distance thinking about all the future papers you know you’ll have to write and the other assignments you will procrastinate on. Right after swallowing your food you smile politely and just say, “School is going super great! I love it.” You look down before anyone can see the single tear rolling down your cheek.
3. Are you sure your major is right for you?
Yes I’m sure. If I wasn’t sure I would have switched majors by now or would still be undecided. Thank you for showing faith in me. Next question please.
4. What are you going to do after you graduate?
What?! I don’t even know where I’m going Black Friday shopping. I don’t have my future entirely planned out. Was I supposed to? Even though you don’t know what you’re going to do with your life, you smile and tell them what they want to hear. “Oh, yeah, I’m definitely going to apply to grad school”…And burry myself into more debt.
5. How are your grades?
You smile nervously when you hear this question. You weren’t trying to think about or look at your grades until two weeks into winter break. Before the sweat starts dripping down your face you casually say, “Oh. Yeah I have all As and Bs”
6. Have you met anyone special?
This question may come up depending on your relationship status last time you went home. You think to yourself, if I’m dating anyone or not, why does it even matter?
7. What are all of you friends like?
They’re awesome thank you for asking. Oh, you meant my friends at school and not at home. Yeah, my roommates are actually awesome people.
8. Do you go out and party?
That is classified information but to answer your question, no. I am a straight A student and do not have time to be distracted by such nonsense.
