I Asked 3 College Students How They Feel About Going Home For The Holiday Season During The Pandemic

With cases continuously rising, both on campus and off, I wondered how concerned students would be about going home for Thanksgiving break to spend some time with their families.

With the United States at its highest peak since the pandemic began, I was curious as to how concerned students were about going home for the holidays and then returning back to campus. I made a short survey and posted it on my social media for fellow students to take. Here are their responses:

What university do you attend?

Student 1: Florida Gulf Coast University

Student 2: University of Tennessee (Knoxville)

Student 3: Florida Gulf Coast University

How will you be spending your Thanksgiving break?

Student 1: "With my immediate family"

Student 2: "With my immediate family and some other family members"

Student 3: "With my immediate family and some other family members"

On a scale of 0-10, with 0 being not concerned at all and 10 being very concerned, how concerned are you about getting Covid-19 or possibly spreading it to your family during Thanksgiving break?

Student 1: "2 - While I do work with the public on a daily basis, I have made sure to maintain social distancing standards, wear a mask, and have been getting tested on a semi-regular basis."

Student 2: "2 - I'm going to get tested before leaving, so I can keep my family safe."

Student 3: "5 - I have a high risk family."

On a scale of 0-10, with 0 being not concerned at all and 10 being very concerned, how concerned are you about returning to campus after Thanksgiving break?

Student 1: "8 - While I know that I am going to be remaining cautious, I know that not all students will have the same idea."

Student 2: "2 - Trusting that everyone in my family takes similar measures, there shouldn't be a problem."

Student 3: "10 - Traveling."

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
