With Thanksgiving just around the corner, there are so many foods that you get to enjoy and often only eat on this amazing holiday. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, not just because I get to spend the whole day being thankful for things with my family, but also because I get to eat scrumptious food in the process.
At my house, the preparations for our Thanksgiving feast usually starts a few days before the actual holiday. My uncle is the main preparer of food, and to ensure we are all well-fed he has to make sure everything is in line and organized. One thing he always does the night before is prepare the pies so he can pop them in the oven the next day. Now, I may be a little biased, but my uncle makes a killer apple pie, and every Thanksgiving I make sure I save a lot of room for a big slice of it. Last year, I arrived at my uncle's house bright and early to help him make the stuffing, mashed potatoes and other goodies that would fill up our table a few hours later. The first words out of my mouth to him were how excited I was to eat some warm apple pie, and he just laughed and casually said he made blueberry pie instead. I then also laughed, for how could we not have apple pie, the most traditional Thanksgiving dessert, on Thanksgiving? He had to have been joking, and honestly it wasn't even a funny joke. Apple pie is not something one should joke about on Thanksgiving.
Well after a few hours of preparing the rest of the meal, my uncle pulled the pies out of the fridge, and horror slapped me across the face. There really wasn't an apple pie after all. Fighting back tears, I did what any normal person would do and drove myself to the closest grocery store to purchase a subpar, non-homemade apple pie. I was going to eat apple pie on Thanksgiving if it was the last thing I did. So dinner rolled around, and we all stuffed our faced with turkey, gravy and buttered rolls. When dessert time rolled around, I choked down my store-bought apple pie and smiled knowing at least I had some dessert to enjoy. Thankfully word got to my uncle about how sad I was to not get any apple pie, and he ended up making me some for Christmas which pretty much made it the best Christmas ever. And this year, he has already told me it will be making an appearance again.
So far all you apple pie-loving people out there, make sure you have all your bases covered for this Thanksgiving season and ask whoever is in charge of the pie to be 100 percent certain they are making it. And remember, always save room for some dessert because that's the best part of a Thanksgiving feast.
