Like many others on Thanksgiving, I had far too much to eat and drink, and felt the effects of this indulgence the next day. But unlike many others, I spent most of the day on Thanksgiving traveling to meet family in Georgia. My family decided that they wanted to begin eating Thanksgiving dinner at 3 p.m., rather than wait for me to arrive from South Carolina a little closer to 4:30 p.m. While they left me more than enough to eat, by the time that I arrived all the good spots on the sofa were taken to watch football and half of the grandparents were already in their post-meal slumber phase.
You would think that this would mean that I was able to avoid something that I sometimes dread, catching up with different relatives. But in reality I became the center of attention due to my late arrival. While I was stuffing my face because I hadn't eaten all day, I was bombarded with questions from relatives about what was going on in my life and if I had finally settled down and ready to get married, etc. I am decidedly far from that point in my life, but I am pushed closer towards it with each family holiday gathering.
Of course I am only joking about not wanting to catch up with my family. Thanksgiving is by far one of my favorite holidays. Overeating, copious amounts of beer and football.... what's not to love? But what I truly found myself enjoying in recent years was the time that I was fortunate enough to spend with those family members that I do not get to see as frequently as I would like to. I urge any readers of this post to consider that thought the next time that they are dreading a family gathering. One day they will not be there to ask you all those awkward questions.
Til next time.
