On Wednesday, November 9 at around 1 am, the world watched as Donald Trump was officially announced the winner of the 2016 presidential race to the White House. Many Americans were thrilled, and others were devastated, scared, and in total shock. In the past week, thousands of anti-trump advocates have taken to the streets to voice their anger about the results. In response, Trump supporters have taken their opinions to social media. With people constantly arguing on both sides, it is clear to see that the nation is now more divided than ever.
Because of the current chaotic state of the country, congress has officially announced the cancellation of Thanksgiving. While Americans were shocked at this last-minute decision, most agreed that it would be best to give people time to register the results of the election before continuing the national holiday again in 2017.
Although we won’t be eating turkey and mashed potatoes on November 24, we can still remember the significance of this national holiday. Rather than fight about politics, we should take some time to focus on what Thanksgiving really teaches us: gratefulness, family, and good old fashioned imperialism.
