To My Best Friend’s Mom,

I know where my best friend got all her best characteristics, where she learned to be caring, compassionate, and let’s face it, a little bit crazy. She got all that, and more, from you! So thank you, from the very bottom of my heart, thank you for inspiring and constructing such a wonderful human being.

Without your dedication to your daughter’s upbringing, I would not have the incredible friend that I do today. Only a wonderful mother, like yourself, could have taught her the value of being a good listener, giving solid advice, and keeping secrets until the end of time. Girls don’t just naturally learn those types of things, they learn from example. Lucky for me, my best friend got to learn from the very best example, you! I know this to be true because when I am out to dinner with you when you come visit your beloved daughter at school or when you graciously host me for a weekend visit I see all my favorite parts of a best friend in you as well! Spending time with both you and your daughter always means double the laughs, double the memories, and of course, double the fun!

Thanks for being a cool mom!

I’ve learned so much from my best friend and I know I have you to thank for that. Thank you for teaching your daughter how to do laundry, how to best reheat pasta, how to sew on buttons, and how to bravely kill spiders. Because of all the wisdom you so graciously passed on down to your daughter, I have spent a lot less time googling answers to embarrassingly simple questions. Also, thank you for teaching your daughter that there is no such thing as a stupid question because she doesn’t laugh at me when I ask if I can microwave my leftover pizza in tin foil. I know I have you to thank for that because when she logically explains how that could start a fire, I don’t feel as dumb as I should because she speaks with such understanding.

Thank you for raising one of the kindest, funniest, most beautiful, most intelligent human beings I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. It may not have been easy but let me tell you, it was more than worth it and for that I am forever grateful for. Thank you for leading my example. Thank you for raising an intelligent young woman who values quality over quantity, brains over beauty, and friendship over fortune. Thank you for helping her make all the right choices that led her path to cross with mine. But most of all, thank you for being you because without my best friend’s mom I wouldn’t have a best friend.

With love,

Your Daughter’s Forever Thankful Best Friend

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
