Starting my freshman year at Erskine if you would have told me that I was going to play lacrosse as well as volleyball I would had laughed. And like most things I got talked into playing. So my school year went as follows:
Fall semester I played volleyball and spent more time in the gym than in my dorm and classes combined. From practices to workouts to rehab I found that the gym was pretty much my home. As much as I enjoyed playing with my teammates I was looking forward to getting a little bit of a break during the spring semester to pull up my GPA and get to meet new people. Except I agreed to embark on a new challenge of playing (more like attempting) lacrosse. Getting the only break between sports I thought I would do lots of things during Christmas break instead of spending all of it with family. Christmas break came fast and was over faster just as fast and it became time to move back into 217. While everyone partied during J-term, I had 6:00 a.m. workouts and 6:00 p.m. practices every day. While I running no longer bothers me I still do not care for it. In addition to lacrosse workouts and practices and my classes, I had to make time to spend as much time with my volleyball teammates. I didn't think that I would miss as much stuff as I did, however, I have just as amazing memories with my lacrosse team.
While embarking on the lacrosse adventure I not only made amazing friends but I experienced what it was like to be on a team that fought issues no other team had to face. During the middle of the season, we had to cut all non-conference games due to injuries and while it was left up to the players. Even though our record was terrible the one thing we did best than all the other teams was fight our hardest. I learned that even with two minutes left A LOT can happen in those two minutes. I also learned that the team was only as good as their most unconditioned player. This was and still is my motivation as to why being fit and in shape is so important for both sports. I got over my perfectionist ways and learned that making mistakes is okay and to make it up the next chance I get. Since we only had a limited amount of people I knew that I would get another chance the next time the other team came down the field.
As freshman year is now over I can look back on the memories of being stressed out and know that every minute was worth it. I learned how to manage time and prioritize.
