Thank Your Family

My family has taught me many things, including how to be the best version of me that I can be.

Thank Your Family
Maeve Armstrong

21 years ago, I was born into the most beautiful family. I have a gracious father, a patient mother, and a strong brother. I have countless cousins, several aunts and uncles, and the world's perfect grandparents.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to write a novel about each and every one of my family members, but just for the record, they are all amazing people.

My father has shown me grace. My dad has manners, he has charm, he shows mercy, and he is kind. He does everything right.

He makes sure everything he does everything by the book. I can't tell you how many times people have told me how courteous and polite my dad is. He speaks with poise and prays with confidence.

My dad would do anything for anyone no matter how many times they have wronged him. He has done many eulogies, and all made perfectly for that person and their family. He hand writes notes for widows and for people going through a hard time.

But what is the most incredible thing about my dad is that he doesn't want credit for any of it. He will actually be embarrassed that I am writing this, but he has shown me grace and how to show that to other people. And I can't thank him enough for that.

My mother has taught me patience. My momma is the world's most patient person. She listens to all my complaints, my rants, and has been there when I have been inconsolable.

My momma holds me when I am upset and doesn't give me advice. She just holds me and listens to me. She has a heart as pure as gold and doesn't show any annoyance no matter how matter how many times I call her about the same problem that I am having.

She babysits my cousin's baby and has never lost her temper or has been upset with her. She also slept on the couch for over a year with my stubborn grandmother without a complaint.

My momma is perfect in every way, and people tell me how beautiful she is every day. She taught me how to be patient even when I was lacking.

My brother is strength. Physically, yes, my brother is huge and is very strong, but mentally he is even stronger. He is a force.

He has been on the grind for as long as I remembered. He goes to the gym in the morning, goes to work, studies for the CPA exam, then goes back to the gym.

Chance gives no excuses. He does what he has to do to be successful. He taught me how to compete and how to win.

Even though he is my biggest competition, he is my biggest cheerleader. He is the best big brother a girl could have. He has instilled a fire in me to fight and find the strength to keep going, and I am forever grateful for that.

My family has shown me so many things and have taught me how to be the best version of myself. They are my role models, and I thank the Lord every day for my family. Find the qualities in your family and thank them.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
