What I'm Thankful For This Year

It’s crazy to think that this Thursday will be another Thanksgiving. So much has happened in the year since last Thanksgiving. As I took some time to reflect on the past year I realized just how much I am thankful for this year. I am sure many of you will be doing the same thing over the next week or so and can probably relate to the many of the things I am thankful for. So in spirit of the holidays this is what I am most thankful for this year.

Family

Any of these following things would not be possible without my family. They are what keep me sane and grounded. They are the people that answer my calls and listen to me vent about the most ridiculous things. I am lucky enough to have them supporting me through my schooling and I hope they know how much I appreciate that gesture. I’ve learned so many valuable lessons from my family and would not trade any fight, argument, or disagreement for the world.

Friends

As my second family, my friends keep me well balanced when my family is not able to. They are also the people that I laugh the hardest with, yell the most with and have the most fun with. This past year has been finding true friends that will be there for you no matter what. I think I am finally in a place when I can say that I am truly surrounding myself with healthy friendships that I don’t see losing any time soon.

Mentors

The adults in my life that have been so influential that aren’t my family I consider my mentors. There are a few that I can think of off the top of my head but I am sure there is more than that. The ones I’m thinking of have helped me grow in more than ways I could ever imagine. They are there to give me the most sincere but also the most blunt answers/truth I’ll probably ever hear. They have put me on the path I am towards my future career and life.

My Job/Co-Workers

My current job comes with its frustrations and difficulties, but I am learning so much from everyone I work with. I don’t think the most important things I will learn to be a teacher will come from a college course but from children themselves. To the people I work with, thank you for dealing with me on my worst days and answering my questions, even the ones with seemingly obvious answers. I am so thankful for my job and would not trade it for the world.

School

I’ve said this in a previous article but I’m going to say it again. This is the first semester that I have been truly happy with being in college and my classes. I feel like I actually belong and I am excited for the future. I am so thankful for my school and they people here. I know this is where I am supposed to be.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
