Thanksgiving might be over, but the year still isn't. And I'm sure a lot of people will be glad when it ends. While it might have been a decent year for some people, it certainly wasn't the best year for the world. It's not just about the election, even though it did play a big part.
We lost so many famous people this year. One of the most significant deaths was singer-songwriter David Bowie, who passed away from cancer two days after his birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar. I'll never forget when I first heard about it. I woke up, looked at my phone and couldn't believe that it was real. We lost a truly inspirational musician.
Bowie is just one of the many. Prominent 80s musician, Prince, died of an accidental drug overdose in April. Actor Alan Rickman from Harry Potter, Die Hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves also died of cancer just a few days after Bowie. Finally, just recently, we lost beloved musician and poet known for "Suzanne" and "Hallelujah" among others, Leonard Cohen.
We all know about Harambe, so I'm not even going to bother with that.
The shootings were also very tough to deal with, from the dreadful Orlando nightclub massacre to the numerous police shootings.
There was so much that happened this year, but remember, we always have the chance to start again. That's definitely what I'm thankful for. Yes, famous people will die and shootings will occur, but hopefully it will be infrequent next year. Even though Trump being president might be terrifying, we still have to stay optimistic.
I think we should be glad that the year is coming to an end. I'm expecting 2017 to be a year of possibilities. Even though I did say this last year, with any luck we have a chance to redeem ourselves. We don't even have to wait until January 1 - every day is the chance to start over. Since we're so caught up in our lives, we often forget that, but it is so true.
