Thanks Dad

Thank you for being my number one supporter.

Thanks Dad

Dear Dad,

I don’t even know where to start, but I certainly have to say thank you. Thank you for being my number one supporter in everything that I do. You deserve to know all the ways that you’ve impacted my life:

Supporter

You’ve always been my biggest fan. You sat through all my dance performances and musicals for years, even though we all know you don’t like musicals at all. And you were always there to give me a hug after the performance and tell me how all my hard work paid off. Also, even though I tried about every sport and ended up quitting on all of them, thank you for always supporting me in all my endeavors.

Chauffeur

Even though I drive myself everywhere now, I appreciate all of our car rides together. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to drive me to school, extracurricular activities, or to go get food. I loved sitting in the car, jamming out to Van Halen together, or when you put on your talk radio and we would go on political tangents for the entire car ride. I’ll always cherish those car rides.

Humor

You are one of the funniest people I know. You constantly have me laughing, and I’m glad we have the exact same sense of humor. You’re such a sarcastic person and I’ve become exactly the same way.

Teacher

Thank you for always teaching me not only about school, but also about life. I’ve always been terrible at math and you always took the time to sit down and help me with whatever problem I was having. I also know I still have a lot to learn about life. But if it weren’t for you, I would have a lot more to learn. You always give me the best advice and tell me what I need to hear which isn’t always what I want to hear. You always keep me in check with reality, and for that I’m extremely thankful.

Perfectionist

You are a perfectionist in everything that you do. You work harder than anyone that I know in everything that you do. You criticize your own food when you don’t cook it just right. You’re extremely competitive when it comes to mini golf and you refuse to play certain games when you know you’re going to lose. This perfectionist nature is in my bones. You’ve taught me to never settle for anything less than my best. I strive for good grades because of what you’ve taught me. This helped me develop perseverance and strength.

A father-daughter relationship is a very special one. All the car rides, tutoring sessions in math, and heart to hearts have caused us to become so close. We’ve developed such a strong bond over the years that could never be broken. You are the most hard working, driven, and loving person in my life. I hope I can live up to your footsteps one day.

I love you so much.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
