Although it is mid-November and the fall-like temperatures are only just beginning, the fall spirit has been around for awhile and Thanksgiving is all around the campus. Wednesday night, a week and a day before Thanksgiving, Baylor hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for its students. There was turkey, ham, and plenty of pie. We were somewhat forced to go to the dinner, because all of the dining halls had closed in order to pull off the massive event, but maybe there was another reason they did everything they could to get us there.
More and more every day I am reminded that Baylor is a community. I obviously do not have any experience with college life at any other other university, but I do think Baylor has something very special going on. We do not have parents at college. That simple fact puts us in a place with a whole new responsibility of looking out for one another. Sometimes, we get sick. When a person gets sick, I have witnessed offers to take them to the doctor, give them whatever medicine they can find, or urge them to sleep and promise to give them lecture notes later. Sometimes, we have birthdays. When it was my birthday, some of my friends, none of which I have known for more than 4 months, crafted extravagant plans and kidnapped me. Sometimes, we just need a little extra encouragement. College can be a big challenge. Life can be a big challenge. There is nothing better than being surrounded by like-minded individuals who have just gone through or are currently going through similar trials as you.
This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my Baylor family.
