10 Thank You's to My Little Sister

1. Thank you for being my built in best friend.

We may not get along all the time, but you are the one person who has been there for me since the second you were born. I would do anything to protect you and I know you would do the same. I'll never leave you and I'll always have my back.

2. Thank you for the hugs.

These days, now that were older, hugs are few and far between. Each and everyone of them mean more than the world to me. We are safe together.

3. Thank you for never giving up on me.

I can't begin to tell you have many mistakes I've made and how many times I've wanted to be the perfect example for you and failed, but you never turned against me and never got impatient with me. You believe in me and I will always be grateful.

4. Thank you for being sarcastic.

What would a sister be without jokes, giggles, inside jokes, and of course, sarcasm.

5. Thank you for the sleepovers.

Yes, sleepovers with your sister are still sleepovers. Movie nights, gossip, and popcorn. The memories will last a lifetime.

6. Thank you for making family vacations an adventure.

The Disney World Relays through Magic Kingdom and the dolphin swimming in the Bahamas wouldn't have been quite as hilarious and interesting without you right next to my side.

7. Thank you for being a shoulder to cry on.

From the time we were in elementary school to now that I am in college and you're getting ready to finish up high school. Through every loss and gain. The happy and sad tears, it has always been you cry and I cry and as much as it sucks to see you cry, I love that about us.

8. Thank you for being strong.

In our time on this world together we have watch one of our very best friends kill himself. We have watch our grandma suffer from a very severe stroke. We've dealt with boys being stupid and girls being backstabbers. Through every single thing you have been the reason I have got through it. You support me and you love me so much. You are strong in every single way and I love how much you've become independent.

9. Thank you for loving me.

Thank you for loving every inch of me from the beginning. Thank you for listening to my problems without making it a big deal. Thank you for being weird with me and acting weird with me. Thank you for accepting me.

10. Thank you for being you.

The goofiness. The laughs. The tears. The movie nights. The vacations. Every single day I spend with you. Thank you for being the best sister I could've ever been given. You are my best friend. That will never change. Thank you so much for being who you are and never budging for anyone. I love you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
