An Open Letter To My Roommates

They deserve some love!

An Open Letter To My Roommates
Alaina Pierson

Dear Caroline and Emily,

I am writing this letter to say thank you for everything.

Thanks for dealing with my messes.

It's college and we're all busy. Life gets in the way and sometimes I forget to pick things up off the floor, or my closet is an absolute disaster. Thank you for being okay with the fact that I am not a clean freak, no matter how hard I try. For how small our room is, I am pretty proud of myself and all of us for not having it look like a bomb went off 24/7.

Thanks for being my go-to's for hair, outfits, and makeup.

When it is time to go out for the night, I sometimes struggle on how I should present myself for the night. I love that we always show each other our outfits, and ask each other what we're doing in terms of styling hair and doing makeup. It's always a party when all of us are getting ready for the night: music bumping, singing, dancing, the whole nine yards.

Thanks for constantly making me laugh.

Whether it's something that happened to us during the day, or for no reason at all, you both always are hilarious. I love how funny you both are, and it makes life more fun. Life is too short to be serious all the time. If I don't hear anyone's laughter from outside our room in the hallway, we're either not home, or there's something wrong.

Thanks for being shoulders to cry on and for offering words of wisdom.

I don't know where I would be without you guys when times are tough. You both always know how to look on the bright side of things, and know the right words to say. You're caring, and great listeners. When someone needs you, you're there for them no matter what.

I'm going to be completely 100% honest with you: sometimes I have absolutely no idea how to go about a situation and need help. Your advice couldn't be more helpful. You always speak from experience and with good intentions. It shows that you both truly care about whatever it is that is pressing at the moment.

Thanks for being breakfast/lunch/dinner buddies.

Whether it's meals at the house, going out to eat, or ordering in, it's good to know I have someone to get food with. It's fun to be able to catch up on what's going on in each other's lives after a busy day or week. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go out to eat (even though I probably should eat more at home). Also, there are restaurants that I never would have even tried if it weren't for going there with you guys.

Thanks for having my back no matter what.

As we get older, it's clear to see who are your friends and who are your foes. I couldn't be more thankful to have a group of people that I know would stand up for me in any situation. You both are some of the most supportive and reliable people I've ever met. It's hard to find that in a friend nowadays, so it is greatly appreciated.

The point is this: keep doing what you do.

You two aren't just my roommates. You're my best friends, the sisters I never had, and I couldn't be more grateful. I couldn't be luckier to have you guys as my roommates, and the memories of Room 10 will be with me forever. You're both some of the amazing, kind, compassionate, intelligent, dedicated women I've ever met. I know you both are going to go so far and achieve your goals. I can't wait to see what the future holds for you both.

Thanks for everything, Emily and Caroline.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
