A Thank You Letter To My Mom
Cassie Evans

Dear Mom,

Thank you for everything you have done for me all these years. You have been the greatest role model I could have ever asked for! Our family has been through so much together, good and bad, and I am so grateful that you stuck by my side during all of it, even when nobody else was there.

I honestly don't know where I would be without you. You encourage me when I'm feeling down, you correct me when I'm in the wrong, you always make sure I'm putting forth my best effort (even if it's something I really don't want to do) and you are always, always here for me. Not only are you my mom, but you're my best friend, and not many people can say that.

Thank you for setting boundaries. I never liked the rules you had set in place for me, and with me being the oldest I'm sure I got dealt the worst hand. But that's okay. Thank you for making me have an early curfew and for making me turn in my phone before I went to sleep. I didn't really need a phone in sixth grade anyway.

Thank you for running me to every practice, game, meet and more. I wouldn't have made it anywhere on time or at all if it weren't for you constantly picking me up and taking me places. As great as it is having my license and driving myself places, sometimes I wish you still came to pick me up and nagged at me about how my day was!

Thank you for being understanding. I haven't always made the best choices, no kid does. But you were never quick to punish me, you always made sure to understand how I felt and where I was coming from before I got in trouble. Even now that I'm officially an adult, I know I can turn to you with any issue I have and that you will help me in any way you can.

Thank you for having my back. There is a lot of drama that comes with raising four kids, especially when you have more than one teenager in the house! Thank you for standing by me when girls were picking on me, when I didn't get the grade I wanted, or when I was feeling down about how I performed on a test that day. Thank you for always reassuring me that being the bigger person and being kind to others was more important than being popular. Thank you for making me understand that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being yourself.

Thank you for teaching me to find the good in every situation. No matter what happens in my life, I try to find something good out of it and that is one quality that comes directly from you.

Thank you for being my best friend. I know that no matter what happens during the course of my life, the first person I'll call when I'm sad, happy, excited, embarrassed or crying because I hit an animal with a car, will be you. You tell me what I need to hear when I need to hear it and keep me grounded and I am so grateful for that.

You encourage me to follow my dreams, even if they're completely absurd. You're the best mommy a girl could ask for and I love you with all my heart!

Sincerely,

Your grateful daughter

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
