A Thank You To The Two People Who Made Me, Me
Kelsey McPhee

I have never understood the people who say they can't stand their parents.

I look at my mum and dad and see two people who I can trust, love, and respect.

I have always been the girl to go to my parents whenever I have an issue instead of hiding it. I have always been the girl who believes that sometimes a night in with my parents can seem more appealing than going out with my friends. I have always been the girl who when leaving for college, the hardest goodbye goes out to my mom and dad.

Although I am aware some people find this relationship I have with my parents strange, it has never phased me. I know that having this bond with my mother and father has made me not only a better person, but who I am today.

To Mum-I can't remember a time I didn't know if your advice would be helpful. Whether I was upset over something even as silly as a boy, or a math test gone wrong, you are always the first person I call. There's nothing I look forward to more than Grey's Anatomy marathons with a side of popcorn while snuggled in bed next to you. The way you always know what is best for me before I do continues to baffle me every time, but leaves me in even more admiration of you. People aren't kidding when they say "Mom is always right". I love that you always make dad be the one to drop me off at school because you hate the goodbyes. I love you.

To Dad-From the childhood memories of every summer Red Sox games, to the aroma of your famous burgers cooking on the back deck grill, to your constant sarcastic comments, you truly are a super dad. Your famous quote of "it's not easy", says the opposite of what you show me every day. Your work ethic as well as your passion for what you love, inspires me to work hard with constant determination and to aspire to do what I think is going to make me the happiest. From you, I know giving up is never the answer and can be easily avoided with perseverance. I love the fact I know I get my silly side from you. I love you.

To the both of you-You have showed what it means to love. Days go by, and I know the two of you always have each other's back no matter what the circumstance. I hope that one day I marry someone who loves me even half the way you two love one another. With that being said, thanks to you two, I know my worth and I know never to settle for anything or anyone.

I can say on behalf of my siblings, you have taught us to not only be confident in everything we do, but to stay humble while doing so. You have taught us to hold our heads strong, even when we feel the weakest. You have taught us to know that we can strive to be whoever we want to be and you will always support the three of us along the way no matter what.

Don't get me wrong, not everything in my relationship with the two of them goes smoothly. However, each day I wake up knowing how loved and lucky I am to have two parents as wonderful as them.

Happy 25th anniversary Mum and Dad. Thank you for everything. Thank you for making me, me. Love you more.

Kels

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
