Thank You to Police Officers

Some Heroes Wear Capes, Ours Wear A Badge

Thank You to Police Officers
Mackenzie Campbell

I want to start with this--

I am sorry.

The animosity and scrutiny against police officers is truly unfair and you do not deserve it.

I am sorry that some other police officers actions have created such a nasty connotation towards the majority of police officers.

There was a time when police officers were considered heroes, saving those in need, taking crime and violence off the streets, but now people look at cops with disgust and hatred.

To the hundreds of thousands of good, honest and hard-working police officers out there, thank you.

Thank you for putting on your uniform every day and putting your life on the line for your families and allowing others to live safely.

Thank you for never giving up on society no matter how it seems as though society has given up on you.

Thank you for continuing to serve and protect your fellow citizens, even though some citizens don't want to protect you.

I am so thankful for your bravery and the courage that you demonstrate.

I support you and everything that you do.

The difference is that I am not an average person thanking you. I write this as a daughter of a police officer, a daughter that worries constantly about her father until she hears the garage door close at midnight and knows that he is home, safe.

I have experienced the other side of truly knowing a police officer.

You are dads, moms, daughters, sons, aunts, uncles, grandfathers and grandmothers. You truly are no different than everyone else.

You put on a uniform every day, the only thing keeping you safe is a bulletproof vest and the grace of God.

I am thankful that I have been given the opportunity to call a police officer my father.

I am thankful that I am able to see the side of police officers that not many people are lucky enough to see.

You see things that the average person would never imagine seeing. You are put in awful situations and are forced to make fast decisions.

I am proud of you, I pray for you every day and I respect you.

You are loved and all you do is not going unnoticed.

People across the nation are hateful about the man in the uniform, I know not everyone is “superman” however, many are.

They say horrible things about you and blame you for the mistakes of other. In today's day and age, it has become general belief that all police officers are the same.

I apologize for all of those people, I am sorry they place a stereotype on you, I am sorry they forgot that you are trained to protect life, not end it.

You chose to be a police officer to clean the streets and provide a safer life for your children and those in the community.

You leave your house every day knowing there is a chance that you may not come back.

Being a cop is a high-risk job, one that requires a brave, selfless individual who is willing to take a bullet.

Police officers are out there protecting your families, your city, your life and you have the audacity to look down on them.

I understand that not all cops are good, but not all cops are bad.

It is hard being a cop in today’s world. They do not do what they do to be in the news, they do what they do because becoming a police officer meant they got to save the lives of others.

We all see you.

We all thank you.

p.s. thank you, dad for risking your life every day and doing so much for our family. I love you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
