Thank You To My Parents For Everything

I love you both.

Thank You To My Parents For Everything
Kinley Powell

There is nothing like a sweet family. I am extremely blessed to be a part of one. I love knowing that I am loved and believed in. I also love loving and believing in them just as much. I wanted to take the time and openly tell my parents how much I appreciate them, to make up for the times when I forget, too. xoxo.

Thank you for being my support system.

Throughout my years, I have had some times in life where I needed support. Whether it was through sports, relationships, friends, jobs, or normal everyday life, both of you have never failed to be there for me. You never stopped supporting me, and loving me throughout every decision I made.

Thank you for your constant "checking up."

I know I might seem annoyed when you ask me what my plans are 10 times a day, where I am going, who I'll be with, what time will I get home, yada- yada- yada. But knowing you both truly care makes me feel like the luckiest daughter in the world. I couldn't imagine if I didn't have someone checking in on me as much y'all do. Not in a crazy way, but in a loving kind of way.

Thank you for telling me like it is.

Many times in life I have been right, but many, many times in life I have been wrong. Thank you for being an honest, genuine soul that only wants the best for me, and for teaching me truth. Thank you for being honest with me when I need to hear it. I know you are only telling me what I need to hear to better my future.

Thank you for sacrificing everything for me.

I am extremely thankful for all that you have ever done for me. I am thankful you work so hard to put food in my tummy and sacrifice a night out with your friends when I am sick, only to take care of me. I appreciate all the valentines day, birthdays, and Christmas gifts that I will probably never be able to repay you for. Despite that, you continue to do it anyway each year without asking for anything in return. Thank you for being hard workers, which shows a lot about your character, so that I have someone to look up too.

Lastly, Thank you for being you...

There is no one else that would have been a better parent for me than the two of you. Thank you for all your quirks, habits, goofy jokes, laughter, and memories. Thank you for being stern when I need you to be. Thank you for never trying to be my best friend, but always trying to be a better mom and dad each day. I greatly appreciate all the things you have ever done for me.

In life, I will never forget the times when I was super excited or extremely sad, and no matter how I felt, both of you were there by my side.

Thank you, mom and dad, for loving me unconditionally. I love you!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
