Thank you to my Parents

With Love, from your new college student

Thank you to my Parents
Gianna DiPasquale

Thank you for understanding my busy schedule.

Things were different at home when I was more reliant on your presence and being able to come home every night and see you both. Talking about every aspect of my life wasn’t necessary because you were living it right next to me. As a newly enrolled college student, adjusting to a new schedule and environment isn't the easiest of things. There are so many things to figure out, big and small. On top of this whole new life we have full of new friends, teachers, and classmates, trying to balance living in college and keeping in contact with our home life has its challenges. Thank you for being understanding of this and not getting upset when I may forget to call or respond to a text.

Thank you for raising me to be independent, and now allowing me be off on my own.

Helicopter parents usually lead to a rebellious, freedom seeking child and sometimes going away to college is the perfect opportunity for this, Thank you for not being this parent, and teaching me prior to college how to do my own laundry, and allowing me to manage my school work with my social life and extracurriculars. This prepared me for college and has made the transition less of a shock or abrupt. Being here and having my own space and responsibilities is a learning experience. Thank you for giving me the space to do this and not bombarding me with phone calls and questions, and letting me call you and talk when I am able and want to.

Thank you for checking in on me.

The text messages, pictures and videos of the cats, phone calls whether they’re an hour long or 5 minutes, they are all important regardless of the urgency of the message. Small forms of communication go a long way, especially when we are miles apart. Especially when missing home these little things may make a positive difference in my day, make me smile, and of course excited for the next time I get to see you guys!

Thank you for listening to me talk about my new life.

Unlike in high school when my friends and I would hang around the house or you would drive us places, you don’t personally get to meet all of the new people I meet here and become friends with. I don’t get your opinion of a person and now this is all up to me. Thank you for listening anyway about conversations I have and people I meet. Thank you for listening to me complain when I’m tired, have a lot of homework or when I’m excited or happy about my classes, sports, clubs, and other activities significant or not.

Thank you for Sending me food, things I forgot at home, and other miscellaneous items I may need.

Even with the long list of things to bring to college, and as many items we bought on the many college shopping trips, I somehow have room in my new shoebox of a dorm room for more. Thank you for the room decorations, the food, and other items that I have realized that I needed. After all, getting that email notification that a package has arrived is one of the best email a college student can get.

Thank you for supporting me.

In the end of the day, when my goals may seem unclear sometimes, I know I have your endless support in whatever I do. Your words of encouragement to do well in school, in sports, and to enjoy myself are very much appreciated.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
