A Thank You To My Best Friend On Her Birthday

Thank you really isn't enough, but I guess it'll have to do.

Birthdays are kind of a weird thing, aren't they? Like, we just take the day we were born, and turn it into a number. Every 365 days we eat cake and ice cream, people buy us presents and we add a year to our age. What's equally as weird, is that we associate this age with our appearance and feelings. Some people don't let this number bother them, while others dread their birthdays in every way.

I'm the type of person who hates my own birthday. I don't like the attention, so the less that happens on my birthday and the fewer people who know it is my birthday the better. The thing is, when it comes to other peoples' birthdays I go all out, especially my best friend's birthday. That being said, here are a few thank you's for my best friend on her birthday.

1. Thank you for the countless number of inside jokes

You wouldn't be the world's greatest best friend if you didn't laugh at my dumb jokes. Having someone who gets my humor is one of the greatest things ever. That feeling when we're literally sobbing from laughing so hard is probably my favorite feeling.

2. Thank you for your Netflix recommendations

I am currently binge-watching that show you recommended and I couldn't be more grateful that I took that advice. Remind me to listen to your opinions more often.

3. Thank you for your kid

Yeah, that sounds dumb, but he's adorable. His smile makes my rough days easier, so thanks for blessing me with your child.

4. Thank you for backing me up when I'm right

You're always the first one to stand up for me. Thank you for making me feel like I'm not alone.

5. Thank you for telling me when I'm wrong

No matter what the situation, you always have the perfect way of telling me that I should reconsider my viewpoint. Not many of my friends are willing to give me the truth, but you know that it is what I need to hear, and you always make sure I hear it.

6. Thank you for the nights spent watching movies and sporting our pajamas

It's nice to watch a movie with somebody who doesn't try to talk through the whole thing and has an appetite like mine.

7. Thank you for giving me someone to count on

No matter what the case, I know you're just a phone call away. Whether I need a pep talk, or a good laugh, I know that I can count on you.

8. Thank you for listening to the annoying rants

It's usually a series of the same rants, just in a cycle format. No matter how many times I go on and on about the same things, you always seem to respond with excitement and you always have just the right words to say.

9. Showing me that the world is still filled with good people

When everyone else makes me question my faith in humanity, you make me see that there are still good people out there.

10. Thank you for being the world's greatest best friend.

No matter what happens, you have always been there for me. I hope you have a great birthday, because you deserve it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
