Thank You, Odyssey For Everything

Who knew there was an island out there just for me?

As someone who has only recently begun contributing to Odyssey, I can honestly say that this is one of the more daunting things I have ever had to do. I pull up the website frequently to look at what people are writing, looking for inspiration and encouragement. But more often than not, I come away thinking to myself that, amid all of the political write-ups and "Open Letter To . . . ", I have no place. That surely there is no room for me amongst the great young writers of my day.

But the incredible thing is that here on Odyssey, it isn't just about who is cut out for this type of stuff. It is about communities, using our words to form the bricks. When I signed on with Odyssey, I was introduced to a team based out of my own hometown. Which means that alongside our discussion over article topics, we talk about local high schools and share family photos.

Odyssey is something so different from anything I have ever experienced. I have blogged for a while now, and blogging can often feel like a lonely sport when one is sitting quietly in a coffee shop, writing for themselves. I have journaled for as long as I can remember, and I have scribbled musings for years, but Odyssey provides writers with a totally new field of opportunities because they have something that no other writing platforms have:

Family.

I know it may seem like a stretch. It may seem overly-sentimental. But I love opening up all of the messages from my team, seeing the encouragement and feedback. It feels like family, the way we talk and encourage and listen to one another. While opening Odyssey on my laptop can make me feel small, this group of like-minded people reminds me that Odyssey isn't for the politically accurate and college-degreed of society.

Odyssey is a place for all of us - experienced, or not; studied, or not; professional, or not. It is a place where so many of us with voices can be heard. It is far from lonely, and it is far from corporate. Odyssey is community and family and people. Real people. We don't get everything right all of the time, and we are still learning how to juggle life and family and school and work. We mess up, and even though many of us feel like Misfit Toys, Odyssey is the island that we all rest upon.

So, thank you Odyssey, for everything. Thank you for the new friends. Thank you for broadcasting our voices. Thank you for opening up avenues that many of us didn't know existed. I think I can speak for all of us when I say I am forever grateful for the family of writers that Odyssey has given me.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
