A Thank You Letter to Virginia Tech

Dear Virginia Tech,

Thank you for welcoming me here. As a Virginia Tech student, we are given many opportunities to get acquainted to this university that seems so big at first. Events like Hokie Focus, orientation, and Hokie Camp are a few ways where we begin to understand how a place so big can feel like such a tight-knit community.

Thank you for keeping me full. With some of the best campus food in the country, we never go hungry while at school. We have several phenomenal dining halls that have countless options for many different taste buds. From lobster and steak at West End to Qdoba and Bruegger's Bagels in Turner, there is always something to satisfy your craving.

Thank you for giving me a quality education. For as many classes that Virginia Tech offers, there are topics for every interest. Because Virginia Tech is a research institution, our professors are always keeping up to date on the latest information. Additionally, even though some classes are filled with 300 or even 500 students, the professors are always willing to connect with their students.

Thank you for giving me the greatest college football experience. The unique atmosphere of a Virginia Tech football game will always give you chill bumps. Standing in the student section of the North End Zone for an important game against Miami, UVA, or especially Ohio State is unlike any other feeling. The coolest thing is seeing every Virginia Tech fan jumping to Enter Sandman before the team runs out of the tunnel. It's definitely the experience of a lifetime that every student should enjoy at least once during their college years.

Thank you for keeping me entertained. By constantly offering events like Gobblerfest, Spirit Rallies, sporting events and concerts by artists like Juicy J and Brad Paisley, Virginia Tech students always have something to do. Not only does Virginia Tech offer many activities, but the town of Blacksburg does, too. We have a movie theater (with free popcorn on Mondays!), popular restaurants like Mellow Mushroom and Cabo Fish Taco, and stunning mountains to hike like McAfee's Knob and the Cascades. There is almost no way to get bored in a place like Blacksburg.

Thank you for keeping me fit. Virginia Tech is ranked for being one of the fittest college campuses around. With also being ranked for having some of the best campus food, some may wonder how this is even possible. Virginia Tech is a spread out campus with some hills, a lot of steps, and two incredible gyms to keep its students in shape. It is by far an accomplishment to uphold both of these rankings.

Whether it's the academics, the football, the food, or the entertainment. Being a Hokie is one of the greatest decisions I have ever made. I'm forever grateful for attending such an outstanding university. Thank you for being so great to me, Virginia Tech!

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
