A Thank You Letter To My Freshman Year Of College

You've helped me grow more in the last nine months than I could have ever imagined.

Dear freshman year of college,

As this semester and school year comes to a close, I would like to thank you. I want to thank you for everything that you've been: exciting, scary, difficult, and exhausting. You've taught me how to do so many things: have patience, procrastinate, run off of five hours of sleep, make time for that quick meal at Chipotle (trust me, there is always time), and juggle academics while playing a collegiate-level sport. But most importantly, you've helped me mature as a young adult, and that is what I am most thankful for. You have helped me grow more in the past nine months than I could have ever imagined, and for that I will be forever grateful.

School is hard. There's no other way to say it. The workload that I have carried in college is unlike anything that I have ever experienced. You either sink or you swim. There is no in-between. You've taught me how to prioritize and manage my time more effectively...or at least attempt to. It's so easy to get caught up in the excitement of being a college student. As a freshman, I've tried to balance out school and sports and social events, and let me tell you - it's not easy. You've helped me begin to realize that while it is fun to go out and spend time with friends, school comes first. So, thank you, freshman year of college, for challenging me to become a better student and understand where my priorities lie.

Moving a thousand miles away from home was one of the toughest - if not the toughest - things that I have ever had to do. My family is my rock; I never thought that I would be able to love anyone or any place as much as my family and my hometown. You proved me wrong. My new 'home away from home' is fantastic, and I can't imagine a better place for me to live. Because of you, I also have had the pleasure of meeting some of the greatest, most genuine people that I have ever come across. I consider my new friends (and teammates, of course) my family, and I can't imagine my life without them. I still miss my family, but the friends that I've made help me cope with my homesickness. The people that I have met my freshman year of college have helped shape and mold me into a stronger, smarter, and overall better person than I was nine months ago. So, thank you, freshman year of college, for giving me the greatest friends in the entire world.

You truly have been a year to remember. I never imagined that my freshman year would entail what it has, but I am thankful for every single thing that has happened that has led me to where I am today.

Thank you, freshman year of college, for being better than I could have ever imagined you to be.

If sophomore year is anything like you were, I'm ecstatic for what our future holds.

Thanks again,

Hailey Wilson

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

College without friends is like peanut butter without jelly.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
