A Thank You Letter To My Summer Job

From cliff jumping to volleyball tournaments, you guys made my summer.

A Thank You Letter To My Summer Job
Tom Richardson

It’s the time we’ve all been waiting for. The time we dreamed about in the middle of those 12 hour shifts. Finally, the season has come to an end. Sure, we have a few weekends left, but many of us have worked our last shift, whistled at a running kid for the last time. So here’s all the things I want to say but will probably forget about in the hullabaloo of clearing out my locker.

Thank you for being the best coworkers I could ask for. I used to work at a grocery store so I actually do have a comparison for this, and believe me, you guys blew them out of the water. In the beginning of the season we had some rough times. But we didn’t let it hurt us, we didn’t quit and let the whole summer have a cloud hanging over it. Instead, we came together and became stronger than ever, which was helped by the group message and just by the fact that you guys rock.

From the before-work meals at Omeletty’s to after volleyball get-togethers at Cone Palace, you guys made my summer. I always had someone willing to grab food with me, bring me food or eat my leftovers (wow, we ate a lot). Thank you for sharing the popsicles and Capri Suns that were supposed to be for the swim lessons kids (they get that kind of stuff on the daily, we deserved it more, right?). When I went to concerts, I always knew at least three of my coworkers were there, which was good because in a crowd of thousands (I’m looking at you Luke Bryan), it’s nice to know there’s some people who have your back.

Thank you for helping me face my fear of heights when we went cliff-diving. Thank you for the photo shoot calendar. Thank you for being the most spectacularly odd, amazing, wonderful group of people to work with.

Thank you to my coordinators. I’m sorry for that time I didn’t take off the right day for the Luke Bryan concert. Thank you for finding someone to cover my shift and not yelling at me and instead requesting that I just tell you how it went instead. Thank you for always thinking of me when someone else needed a shift covered, also thank you from my bank account. I know you guys were stressed always trying to make the right teams and cover people’s shifts, especially you-know-who’s constant days off for her family emergencies, like that time she had to go shopping. She’ll never say thank you so I’ll say it for her.

Thank you to the managers for bringing in the cheese doodles. I didn’t actually think cheese doodles were real, but they are and they are delicious. Thank you for letting us go down the slides when we were overheating. Thank you for having our backs when crazy patrons went off on us.

From sunny days where we died, to the cold, rainy days when there was only one person in the pool, you all made summer 2016 the best summer yet.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
