A Thank-You Letter To My Past Lovers
Hannah Rabatin

Failed relationships are commonly looked at as something that you want to forget. It was a time of rejection, betrayal and heartbreak. This is how I perceive all of my past lovers. I've never had a clean breakup. I have always been the one broken up with, never the one doing the breaking.

I've been tossed around and treated like I'm not worth anything. I've given away my heart, only for it to be thrown away. I know what it's like to feel like you're not good enough to be in a relationship with anyone. It is thanks to my ex-lovers that I have felt that way. Even so, there is so much more that I wish to thank them for.

And so here is my letter to all of my past loves. It may seem a little short, but so was our relationship. You hurt me, but you didn't damage me. In fact, you made me stronger. And so, this one's for you.

Dear Ex-Lovers,

I want to thank you.

Thank you for hurting me then, so that I can be stronger now.

Thank you for pushing me away, so that I can find someone better for me.

Thank you for being an example of what not to look for in a relationship.

Thank you for helping me figure out what I want in a relationship.

Thank you for giving me experience so that I can go into my next relationship confident and relaxed.

Thank you for loving me for at least a short time, even though it wasn't enough.

Thank you for helping me understand that I can't find happiness in settling for anything less than ideal.

Thank you not wasting any more of my time.

Thank you for lowering my expectations in the most positive way possible.

Thank you for showing me that you are not what I need.

But above all, thank you for teaching me to love myself before others. Because I matter. And that's all that matters.

Sincerely,

A more confident me

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.

Obsessive Thoughts Keep My Brain Stuck On A Loop And Me Stuck On My Couch

Sometimes my brain just starts turning on an idea and it doesn't want to stop.

I don't know if it is related to my anxiety, perfectionism or depression. I don't know why it happens. It's frustrating, it's painful and it stops me from functioning.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.
