A Thank You Letter To My High School Choir Teacher
Kaysie Burnside

Dear Choir Teacher,

I want to start by saying thank you for everything. Teaching a class of dramatic kids who tend to share their emotions through song cannot be easy. Many days started with a loud chatter of all the things that had happened that day like when 94.1 switched from an Alternative Rock station to country (I'm still not over it) or when the musical rehearsals had run late. Many days ended with us rattling off songs we wanted you to play on the piano the next week. With all of these interruptions, you somehow managed to prepare us for our concerts and improve us each semester.

Thank you for pushing us to break out of our shells. This is a huge one. When I was a freshman I don't think I spoke more than five words a day let alone sang a solo on Friday. In just a year I got the nerve to sing a solo and by senior year, you couldn't shut me up. You never once said anything discouraging. Not even if we forgot the words or hid behind YouTube. You saw something in each of us that we hadn't realized was there yet and that is what being a teacher truly is.

Thank you for making us do sight reading. I never thought I'd say those words but it truly helps in college choir. Thank you for keeping things fun with songs that we enjoy and fun little dance moves. I personally am a little too thankful for the Disney songs.

Thank you for taking the time to help us prepare for whatever we needed. Whether it be a musical audition or an audition for a talent show you were always happy to help. It was always nice to see you out in the crowd at those shows too.

Thank you for helping shape me into the person I am today. I appreciate all of the things you taught me throughout high school. Thank you for pushing me to go out on a limb and try new things. I wouldn't have the confidence I do today without you.

Teaching is one of the most important jobs a person could have. You decided to teach a subject that to most of us in your class think is the most important one of all. It's the subject that is also our passion. You created a safe place for us to be our creative selves. The choir room was like a second home. No matter what was happening, as soon as you stepped into that room your shoulders felt a little lighter. Thank you for making a place for us to fit in and be ourselves.

Sincerely,

A Grateful Student

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
