Thank You For Being A Better Me

It may be cliche, but you are my best friend and you need to hear this.

I just want to say, thank you. To the friend who's always been there.

This is for all the friendships out there that have been through an extremely long, yet totally awesome journey together. You spend more time with this person thank you spend by yourself, and they know EVERY single detail about your life, career, relationships and eating habits. You are BFFLs for LIFE.

Whether you've known them for a decade or just a few months, it doesn’t matter because you just connected so well. It was, like, fate. Your best friend is basically you, but better.

But, have you ever thanked them? No? Well, here is your moment.

Think about why you should be thankful. Try not to remember the screen shot they took of your ugly snap chat this morning, or the time she stole your pants and and blatantly wears them when the two of you go out. Let's just think about the amazing times you've had together.

Like the time you were so sick you could barely breathe out of either nostril, and they asked you to list off every symptom you had just before you received an I’m coming overtext. And then they brought you every little thing you could ever need or dream of at that moment.

And remember when you were having a major meltdown in the middle of the 13th street bathroom, and the only person in the world you wanted at that moment was your best friend. Because you know that they know exactly what to say to get you out of that funk. And, the best part is, is that they already knew you needed help and they're waiting for you with open arms to talk. And this feeling makes you wonder what life would ever be like without them.

Did I mention that the laughter that follows those stupid conversations is so infectious that you get a buzz? Also, we both know you most definitely have those inside jokes that no one can or will understand, ever. Like when you randomly bring up something that you tagged them in on Instagram and then the both of you weep with laughter as the world around you is awkwardly starring. But who cares right? Definitely, not your best friend.

These are the only people who understand when you're flat out broke because there is absolutely no judgment and there’s no hey want to go out to dinner this week. Because you both are considerate to the fact you can only afford the lone box of Kraft mac-and-cheese in the cabinet.

When it comes to you two, there isn't a price on fun. As far as you're concerned, you can have just as much fun watching the new Zac Efron movie in pajamas while chowing down on your mac and cheese.

There are so many personal backstories that you can think of when thinking about your best friend. Including all of the memories that were made due to dumb choices that you made together.

But, you are thankful. Yeah, you really are. So here is your chance thank your best friend for always being there. For being that parent when you're in need of love and guidance. For being a critic when needed, and for that laughter that only escapes your mouth when you are with them.

Because I am thankful for my best friend. I am thankful that she makes me a better me. She IS a better me.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
