Thank You Finals Week

Everything terrible in this world happens for a reason, even finals week.

I know that you're not on anyone's list of a good time. Actually, you are the epitome of what everyone hates. But like someone out there said, "If you have haters, you're doing something right." So from one of your biggest haters, I want to thank you.

Finals week, you have taught me how to multitask in ways I never believed possible. Because of you, I have learned how to effectively study while washing dishes as I am waiting for my laundry to finish.

Finals week, you have provided me ample opportunity to practice my time management skills. I am able to calculate the amount of sleep I need down to the second, how many episodes I can watch on Netflix before my studying needs to become serious, and the exact time I need to leave my room to get somewhere before I completely miss an exam(which I have done in the past).

Finals week has taught me how to truly prioritize the important things in life. Obviously earning an A on a final so you can have a B overall in a class, that is ultimately pointless in regards to the rest of your life, is more important than getting even a minuscule amount of sleep the night before. And who needs a shower when it comes down to your only 10 minutes of free time because you will use those 10 minutes to get food, that is if you can't find a comfy couch to cat nap on.

Finals week has taught me that some people are just damn lucky. While others are cursed with 3 final exams mostly consisting of short answer questions (which did not come with the aid of a study guide) and a final 12 page paper, their are some lucky students who are cruising through finals week studying their study guides and talking about how their multiple choice exams will be a breeze. Life isn't fair, and no one can change that no matter how much you bitch and whine about it.

Most importantly, finals week has taught me that hard work pays off. Endless hours of scrambling through notebooks and memorizing charts, putting off sleep for just one more hour, or hoping you can squeeze one more paragraph of thought into that paper at 5:00 in the morning is worth it when you get that grade. At least that's what we all like to believe.

So at the start of this finals week, I would like to start by thanking this time of the semester. You have taught me many life lessons in such a short amount of time. After my first college finals week I knew my life would never be the same. So before I start bashing on you and how much you suck, I wanted to tell you, finals week, that your terrible ways have at least taught me something(even if it isn't everything I was supposed to learn for these exams).

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
