Appalachian State University has forever changed my life and I am so thankful

Thank You, Appalachian State University
Erika Worley

Over the course of my freshman year at Appalachian State University, I have grown so much through not only the education I am receiving but also the experiences and memories I am partaking in every day. These short five or so months have taught me so much about myself, what I want to do with my life as well as the tools I need to succeed. I have been introduced to the most supportive and loving group of friends I have ever had as well as some of the best moments of my life. Appalachian State University has forever changed my life and I am so thankful.

Appalachian's unique atmosphere has inspired my creativity and made me feel totally and completely at home. The freedom of expression tunnel and various sculptures across campus constantly keep me thinking and I can never get enough of this beautiful campus. Areas such as Sanford mall or the solarium give me a nice place to either sit and think or work on homework while being surrounded by the beauty of nature. Being surrounded by such beauty makes even a simple way to class more delightful and keeps your spirits up in tough times.

I have met my absolute best friends here at Appalachian State University. Without App, we would have never been united and I honestly cannot imagine my life without them. I do not go a day without feeling totally and completely loved, even if they are making fun of me. Being friends with the girls on my floor make me feel like I have a hall full of sisters- sharing each other's clothes and jewelry, doing each other's makeup and forcing each other to go out and have fun even when all you want to do is lay in bed.

App State's faculty truly cares about you and wants you to succeed. The staff here take the, "scary college professor," stereotype and completely crushes it. My professors not only equip me with the information I need to succeed but offer me constant one on one guidance and advice. The learning environment here at App is very personal and I feel comfortable seeking help if I needed it. I have learned well beyond just the information I need to pass the course, as my professors offer me guidance in my day to day life as well.

I realize Appalachian State University is not and will not be everyone's first choice in a college, but that's okay. Appalachian has a lot of great qualities that other schools might not have, but that goes for any college. If Appalachian is not the college for you, I sincerely hope you can find a university that fits your personality, goals and interests as perfectly as App does for me.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
