Thank You, Andrew Shaw

Thank You, Andrew Shaw
Chicago Sports Daily

If there is anything a sports fan will have a hard time explaining to someone who doesn't watch sports, it's all of the emotions that come along with being a fan. We could explain sports terminology to a monkey if we tried hard enough, but can't explain how we get so emotionally invested to save our lives.

For me, sports is an escape. When life gets stressful, turning on a hockey game can make you forget it all for a few hours. Will you stress out about the game? Probably, but it's sure as heck better than dwelling. They say you can't appreciate the good times without the bad, and that comes with sports too. You can't call yourself a fan if you plug your ears when things suck and magically reappear when there's a championship win.

For Chicago Blackhawks fans, this isn't the easiest time. After the playoffs were cut unexpectedly short, everything was pretty quiet until the trades began. It started off with the Bickell and Teravainen trade to Carolina

and although it was tough to see two great guys go, one thing couldn't help but run through the minds of every Blackhawks fan.

Does this mean Shaw gets to stay?

The most popular player to potentially get traded during this offseason was 24-year-old forward Andrew Shaw. Coach Quenneville even said himself that Shaw is "irreplaceable"

due to his unique style of play and charisma on and off the ice. Unfortuantely, being "irreplaceable" wasn't good enough, and Shaw was traded to Montreal on June 24 2016.

This is where all of the emotions come in. Shaw was someone everyone loved (partially due to his incredible sense of humor), and I personally (and on behalf of many Blackhawks fans) want to thank him for a number of things.

1. Thank you for reminding us that we all love shinpads.

2. Thank you for making hockey fights not only entertaining to watch, but hilarious to watch.

3. Thank you for the greatest goal that never was.

4. Thank you for never shutting up.

5. For real though, never shut up. You're hilarious.

"Travis Van Riemsdyk", one the team's top defensemen.

6. Thank you for being so kind to the fans.

"You could have said me, it wouldn't have hurt my feelings."

7. Thank you for always being yourself.

8. Thank you for always giving your all and never letting a few stitches get in the way.

9. Thank you for all of the laughs.

"I didn't lie on my birth certificate."

10. But most of all, thank you for all of the amazing things you have done during your time in Chicago, we will all miss you!

Once a Blackhawk, always a Blackhawk.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
